I'm headed to Vancouver this weekend to give a keynote at SIGGRAPH; I did a long interview with Blaine Kyllo from the Georgia Straight about the subject of my talk -- that is, how you build a digital copyright system that gives creators a fair deal, and why getting it wrong is bad for the whole society, not just artists.

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

    Well, I don’t want to be an ass, but I keep hearing the issue of sampling come up again and again. I just can’t help but think, “easy solution…don’t use samples…be creative and come up with something new.” I mean with today’s technologies you can create any sound imaginable. So…go imagine.

    Am I missing something here?

      Yes you are missing something. You think of sampling as an inferior way to achieve a goal. Many remixers don’t think of it that way. They think of it as a more interesting way to achieve a goal, one that acknowledges the interconnectedness of all ideas and is more explicit (read: more honest) about one’s influences. There is a whole artistic philosophy behind remixing, and your uninformed opinion amounts to saying this entire philosophy should be crushed under the heel of copyright.

      It’s as if you were to say, ‘Why can’t Salvador Dali just draw straight lines like everyone else?’ Or, ‘Why can’t Shakespeare make up his own stories instead of ripping his plots straight from these legends and literary sources. Doesn’t he have an imagination?’

    We’re really looking forward to Cory speaking at SIGGRAPH. As an FYI, SIGGRAPH is not sold out. Registration starts at $45 and goes up from there (depending on what you want to see and how long you want to attend).
