Read the rest of the Hip Hop Family Tree comics!
I hope the author never dislikes me as much as he (apparently) dislikes Russell Simmons.
Not a bad representation; Simmons isn’t the handsomest man in the industry. Here he is with Rick Rubin, circa 1985.
Yeah, I actually don’t have a problem in the world with Russ.
Another great installment, I look forward to these every week.
For those playing at home…
Of course, young DJ Run gave the Christmas rap a try, a few years later. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR07r0ZMFb8
But, my personal favorite, was the Treacherous Three, Santa Rap, from Beat Street. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPXSDo87BR4
we watched it on my across-the-street-neighbors’ betamax. this was the kid that we would drag a piece of linoleum down the street to the basketball court to break on. we pretended not to understand when he mouthed “what the fuck?” but when we laughed at the “my G.I. Joe is just G.I. gay,” we got scolded by his mother.
that same year Detroit PBS actually broadcast Style Wars and my mom, who usually only watched PBS, had it on one day when I wandered into the room. Life. Changed. Forever.
Ed, please tell me this will be a book, and where I can send my money
