Clothing tags from the 80s hid jokes, messages, and mischief

I had a blast looking through this photo collection of old clothing tags, shared by T. Archivist. What makes these tags special are the hidden jokes, messages, and graphics on them — made to add a little excitement and sometimes mischief to the garments. The trend apparently started in the 80s, with designers and brands tucking amusing messages into existing tags or adding a whole secret tag somewhere you'd never think to check.

Some of the tags push the boundaries of what you'd expect to find on a label. I have a feeling that today, too many people would clutch their pearls at a tag like the one in the first photo. A few of the positivity-themed tags in this selection feel like they didn't take full advantage of the opportunity to say something weirder — "live, laugh, love" energy when they could have gone somewhere more interesting. But the good ones are very funny.

From T. Archivist: "A handful of 'Easter Egg' or 'Hidden Message' clothing tags, a trend among designers and brands that started in the 80s. Typically amusing and inconspicuous messages were placed into existing tags or a new secret tag would be put someplace you wouldn't expect to see one."
