Trump Mobile data breach may affect far more than its own customers

As Rob mentioned on Friday, the Trump phone can't be found in the wild: the only models out there, as far as any outlet can see, were the units sent to nerds like me for review. But to make up for it, the company selling the things thought they'd do the Trump family's customers a solid by releasing a shitload of personal data. It's nice to do business with folks as thoughtful as that.

From TechCrunch:

Phone provider Trump Mobile has confirmed that it was exposing customers' names, email addresses, mailing addresses, cell numbers, and order identifiers to the open internet.

A Trump Mobile spokesperson told TechCrunch the company is investigating and found no evidence that financial information was exposed. They blamed a third-party platform provider — unnamed — that handles "certain Trump Mobile operations."

TechCrunch was told by a Trump Mobile representative that the company is currently praying about whether or not they should let customers know that their personal details are out in the wind. I think a good metric for that is this: if the media and a couple of YouTubers have gotten their mitts on the fact that there was a breach, then yes, tell your damn customers.

By not naming the subcontractor that mishandled Trump Mobile customer information, the company may potentially be screwing over a lot more folks than just the people dumb enough to sign up for cellular service from a fella that was able to fuck up steaks, wine, a casino in Atlantic City, a network of training schools, and the lives of uncounted young women and girls. Oh, and the nation. Trump's fucked up the nation. If the company to blame for the security breach caters to other clients as well, the personal information of who knows how many other people could be up for sale as we speak.

It's not just bad corporate citizenship, it's crappy.
