Diplomat Elementary's school yearbook has parents in Cape Coral, Florida, upset after it included a photo of a toddler extending their middle finger to the reader. The kid's mom (and school board member) Vanessa Chaviano apologized for the image im a statement provided to media.
An old toddler photo of our youngest daughter was included by our family as part of a collage in her 'end of year recognition' ad. It was an attempt at a silly, candid toddler moment," Chaviano wrote. "This was poor judgment on my part, and I apologize."
A local news segment about the scandal is embedded below; sadly, the photo is not included.
The photo was not an official yearbook photo, but part of the paid-for extras section that help fund printing.
Dipolmat Elementary Principal Martha Torres also apologized, reports Gulf Coast News Now's Emily Long, in an email sent to parents: "We understand the disappointment this causes, especially in a keepsake meant to celebrate our students' achievements. We are reviewing our submission and oversight process so that this does not happen again."
Update: another news segment from WINK out of Fort Myers, Florida, has the goods, and found some locals to be "mortified" in vox pops.
