Muppets legend and filmmaker Frank Oz has just returned to puppetry with a series of three very short videos of a "People's Court" parody, featuring a nutty judge named Judge Boing Boing. He's an Ed Wynn-type of character who finds each defendant guilty after only a few seconds of comedy schtick.
The character designs are very Muppet-like, but this has nothing to do with Sesame Street nor the Muppets, nor their corporate owner, Disney. Oz, who played many Muppet characters, including Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Bert, Grover and Cookie Monster, co-created, co-writes and directs the episodes.
Other notable former Muppeteers involved in the series are Bill Barretta (Pepé the King Prawn), who co-created and co-writes, plays Judge Boing Boing; Dave Goelz (Gonzo) plays Bailiff Biff; and Kevin Clash (um… Elmo) plays Sgt. Olaf.
Oz hasn't worked with the Muppets or Sesame Street for years. In 2021, he told Hadley Freeman of The Guardian that this is not his choice:
"I'd love to do the Muppets again but Disney doesn't want me, and Sesame Street hasn't asked me for 10 years. They don't want me because I won't follow orders and I won't do the kind of Muppets they believe in," he says. He can't bear to watch the Muppets or Sesame Street today: "The soul's not there. The soul is what makes things grow and be funny. But I miss them and love them."
