Shag carpet around the toilet — the 1970s were something else

These were the bizarre carpeted bathrooms of the 1970s. People put shag carpet around bathtubs, toilets, and sinks because it was considered luxurious and cozy at the time. Some bathrooms even had giant sunken tubs, mirrors everywhere, fake plants, velvet textures, and pink fixtures. It looked less like a bathroom and more like a weird lounge.

A lot of them looked cool in photos, but when you stop and think about it, it's slightly horrifying. Warm, damp carpet in a bathroom sounds like the perfect place for mildew, smells, mystery stains, and trapped moisture. Some even had carpet on the toilet lids and around the base of the toilet itself.

Still, there's something fascinating about how committed the 1970s were to creating a vibe over practicality. Many people wanted their homes to feel glamorous and over-the-top, no matter how questionable the idea was. The result was some of the most unforgettable (and probably least hygienic) bathrooms ever made.
