Starlog returns in November after 17 years out of print

Starlog, the science fiction magazine that ended its 33 year run in 2009, will return this fall with a new print edition, a weekly podcast and a newsletter. And it will be edited by Annalee Newitz!

"Fifty years ago, STARLOG went behind the scenes of alternate worlds for the first time. Now it's back, exploring the visionary sci-fi and cutting-edge science that inspire what comes next. The future will be wild. You'll be ready for it because you read STARLOG."

The magazine returns as Volume 2, Number 1, with the first print issue dated Nov. 13, 2026. It will publish annually and be sold in stores. Newitz is editor-in-chief; the masthead also lists Jordan Hoffman as podcast host and editor of the newsletter, Dave Gonzales as podcast producer, Meredith Borders as senior editor and Jason Kauzlarich as senior art director. The podcast and newsletter are already up and running; magazine pre-orders begin soon.

Newitz founded io9, wrote for The New York Times and teaches. Their fiction includes "The Terraformers" and cosy-SF hit "Automatic Noodle." The new magazine will run science reporting, deep-dive essays on genre, and expose the writers that recommendation algorithms tend to miss.

Starlog was created in 1976 by Kerry O'Quinn and Norman Jacobs as a Star Trek thing, broadened to cover science fiction across film, television and print, and ran for 374 issues before ending in print in 2009. The revival comes from the publishers behind Fangoria, and much of that magazine's staff is involved.

The relaunch is the latest revival; see The Onion (which today is launching the new satirical Info Wars with Tim Heidecker). Alas, Nintendo is reportedly closing Nintendo Power again.
