George Alec Effinger, one of the first science fiction writers I ever met, has died. I was 15 or 16, and he was very friendly and encouraging. He'd been chronically ill for decades, and had at one point been in danger of losing the rights to his characters to the hospital that was his largest creditor in a bankruptcy court. His Marid Aubran novels are cyberpunk classics. Poor piglet.

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.
