Kyle Downes of the aptly named "Ultra Awesome" blog built this genius coffee table that's an enormous, working NES controller! It opens to reveal storage space for tons of game-carts . Link (via Wonderland)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

#11: If you click through to his blog, there is a glass cover for it, to be removed when playing games.

OK, this exemplifies why the human race deserves to be rescued from itself.

  • gadabout

Cool…I could play my new Gulliver game as a lilliputian.

  • jjosef

That is awesome. I want to build one!!!

  • Haldor

    Truly Ultra Awesome.

  • pork musket

That’s fantastic, looks like it would be fun to have 2 or 3 people playing on the same controller.

  • PhiCancri

With the size of this thing I’m surprised they didn’t mod it to have the actual NES inside the table. Pretty sweet regardless though.

  • simplehuman

I wonder if it gets all gummy and yucky like the old NES contrllers.

What? Was that only mine? Call me pigpen.

  • bzishi

This is really cool, but I must admit that the wiring and soldering made me want to cry. Why put so much work on the exterior appearance but do such a half-assed job on the electronics?

  • Dustin Driver

My first thought: ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG.

My second thought: My wife will never let me put one in our living room.

    My third thought: Damn.

  • macegr

@BZISHI: It’s actually not that common to find an attractive art object with expertly done electronics, unless two people worked on the project. Overlap between electronics craftsmanship and artistic ability seems to be lacking. That’s why Ben Heck’s projects are so amazing.

Awesome sauce. I wanna make one! :D

  • Mitch Tishmack

They did this on g4tv back in the day.

Only the g4tv one was bigger, and needed 2 people to play.

Ohhhh…..sick. My consumer gland is overloading my brain with purchasin.

    I must have it.

  • manicbassman

just don’t try and use it as a coffee table though… you wouldn’t want to knock a cup over on it and blow the works…
