ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG. Nipper, a Counterstrike map-hacker, has devised an incredibly detailed reproduction of the Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney World, a ride so fine I wrote a novel about it. Nipper's packed a jaw-dropping amount of detail into the map, even down to various behind-the-scenes sections, and has creatively improved some of the slacker moments in the ride, such as a set of Eschereqsue staircases to one side of the otherwise boring stair-climb. The only thing that could make this better would be modelling ALL the backstage areas, so you could tear through the break rooms and maintenance areas with your giant guns, hunting your fellow players.

YouTube: A ride-through of NIPPER's de_haunts (a "The Haunted Mansion" Counter-Strike: Source map), Download the map (Thanks, David, Nick, Jeremy, Dreambank, Waxy, and Justin!)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Can anyone tell me how to get this map to actually work? I’ve never played Counterstrike before, but I have it on Steam… I downloaded the maps, created a map folder inside my cstrike folder and put the maps in there. They show up under the map choices when I start a new game, but when I try to start, it freezes on “Starting local game server”. Only the custom maps do this. What am I doing wrong?

This took me back about 5 years when it first opened. However, on the hook ramp ours stopped.
(I can’t remember, but I think it may have broke down)
    Really great map though.

  • joe2

i submitted this weeks ago :(

i’m the “joe.to” at the download link

    damn you boingboing!

to get it to work: download it, decompress if it’s not in .bsp format, put the .bsp in your CS/maps folder.

start CS and go into the console and type changelevel (mapname) or alternately start a local/listen server and choose that map.

NIPPER is an amazingly creative and prodigious digital artist. he’s made over 200 FPS maps and quite a few great youtube videos and other things. here’s one of my favorite youtube videos of his:

Simply. Amazing. I may be buying Counterstrike just so I can play this level.

The “playful spooks” ride stoppage was a great touch! Incredible attention to detail.

  • Hanglyman

I tried what you suggested, Joe2, but it didn’t work. Typing it in the console just freezes up the game as it attempts to connect to a server, and I have no idea what a local/listen server is, but I assume it’s what I’m doing when I select “new game” and choose a map, which is what I was already doing without success before.

I’ve only ever been to Disneyland but this haunted mansion seems to have the exact same pink wallpaper that was in my Grandma’s dining room.

Is that really in the Florida one?

I know Cory has been to WDW since the refurb a little over a year ago. I find it hard to believe he didn’t ride the Mansion.

I didn’t wander around downstairs in the Mansion, but my impression from where I did go is that what space there is below the floor is mostly about accessing the ride system. There is a largish room with all of the control systems that is behind and below you when you are looking at the ballroom.

Other than that, you’ve got a tiny break room for operations cast that is to the left as you come in the hallway with someone in a wheelchair.

The Mansion isn’t connected to the tunnel system, so you wouldn’t be able to tie that in with any real accuracy.

This was a pretty amazing effort. There were a lot of little things I missed, but there was so much more that I was wowed by.

Now they need to do one with the holiday “Nightmare Before Christmas” transformation. Just took the kids to Disneyland 2 weeks ago and was delighted to be able to go through with all the Tim Burton inspired designs. Definitely the best ride at Disneyland.

  • joe2

if the game freezes i suspect you have something wrong with your CS files. can you host any map at all including a default map (e.g. de_dust2)?

if you can host a default map and not this map then you are missing some other files in the map pack. try reinstalling it.

    ..Ummm…
    Question.
Why have I received 98 hits from this site for my Haunted Mansion game?
    Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy…But I can’t figure out how.
    Anybody want to comment?
    Thanks. :)

  • 8ThMonth

Oh, and here’s the link to the file I’m talking about.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1M1-my1SeU

It’s a standalone version, so no other files are required to play.

  • jungletek

#10: I suspected that was your problem in the first place.

The article should really be amended, as CS and CS:S are not the same thing.

  • Hanglyman

Tried installing Counter-Strike: Source and using that instead, and they all seem to work with no trouble. :)

Confound you, Doctrow! I was trying to convince myself I didn’t need a book for my field trip to Anaheim, and now Powells is currently relieving me of some of my cash and promising it’ll be waiting for me at the airport.

Mary Sue (yes, really, that’s my name)

    Since this is a Source-engine level…

    …and Left 4 Dead is out…

…COME ON, NEW SOURCE SDK! Bring me a sweet zombie apocalypse in the Haunted Mansion!

  • Anonymous

Wow, that’s all I can say. I’ve only rode the Disneyland one, but I’ve watched a video of the Disneyworld. From what I could tell, it was pretty accurate. For Cs, that’s not bad at all. Great job!

  • Icky Bob

Wow, an opened ended 1st person shooter becomes a rail shooter!

  • Dan

Dammit! That shrieking skull gets me… every… time!

  • Trnck

Nice design for a haunted house, but it fails in scaring players…

  • Tommy

I love that the ride stops, just like the real one.

  • joe2

good news if you have L4D,

the J2 mappers are starting their next map pack:

    L4D Movie Madness

a campaign of L4D maps, each based on a movie :D so far the mines of moria will be in, i’ll suggest nightmare before christmas to them :D

  • Rezpect

Thanks so much for posting this – it totally took me back to being a kid at Disneyland and being actually scared by but also completely enthralled and fascinated in this ride!

“…and has creatively improved some of the slacker moments in the ride, such as a set of Eschereqsue staircases to one side of the otherwise boring stair-climb”

That stair case was put into the Walt Disney World version of the ride about a year ago.

  • CoffeeJedi

Those Escher~esque staircases were actually added to the WDW version of the attraction about a year ago.
