A neat idea from Ian Collins. Make an iPad stand from its own packaging.

    Obligatory “lol iPad” comment.

      What’s a lolipad?

  • Sean Eric FAgan

Except… that’s not in the iPad packaging.

    • Jerril

Perhaps we’re having a linguistic disconnect, but I would say that is definitely packaging – are you saying that the box the iPad is shipped in doesn’t use that compressed fiberboard-type-stuff spacers and they salvaged them from another product? (Ie, you’re disputing the “iPad” part)

Or are you claiming that isn’t packaging? At which point, what on earth do you call it?

      • Brainspore

        So it’s made from iPadding?

  • Obviously

A symbol of clever reuse and conservation topped by a symbol of consumption and consumerism.

    Good idea!

Here is my home made iPad Concorde dock, one on which you can type without needing an extra keyboard.

That’s the packing surrounding the display box if you order it online.

You get a brown cardboard box with two of those recyclable thingys keeping the inner display box from being crushed by overzealous fedex dudes.

    • Sean Eric FAgan

Ah! That explains it. Thank you! (I got mine at a store, so no extraneous packing material.)

  • Stefan Jones

    Suggestion.

After cutting the form in half, before slotting:

Coat the outside of one half with a nice thick coat of yellow carpenter’s glue.

Press the other half on top of it. Use clamps or rubber bands or whatever to hold them together until the glue is thoroughly cured.
Place on a sheet of waxed paper to deal with leaks.

Slot as shown. Sand the exposed edges to remove any hardened glue globs.

Elaborations: Glue to a cardboard base. Glue felt on the bottom side of the base. Put a bag full of sand inside to help stabilize it. Coat with Minwax Wood Hardener (OUTSIDE!) to turn into a composite material. Sand lightly. Spray with enamel primer; dry and sand again. Repeat priming and sanding until smooth. Paint with semi gloss black.

Well, that’s what I would do.

    1) Buy iPad
    2) Throw away iPad
    3) Make 4 iPad stands
    4) Ebay!
    5) Profit!!!

If I am spending $1,000 for an iPad than I am going to get a quality holder and not a cheap stand that will fall over each time I use the touch screen. In addition these type stands will scratch the surface of the glass. This is the one I am going to buy when I get my iPad next week, http://newpcgadgets.com/products/ipad_pedestal/index.html

This is great – add a proper keyboard and mouse and you’d have a fairly useable device – sorta like a netbook only not so portable and more expensive.

  • Skipperoo

Great idea considering today is Earth Day!

Seems it’s easy to fall off:), many types of iPad stands, some cheap and simple, some complex and expensive and some are iPad cases with multi function use. Look at my love stand: http://www.buy.com/prod/360-degrees-rotation-steel-stand-holder-mount-for-apple-ipad/q/loc/101/217050819.html I think it’s cool and recommend . Simple and stabile!

  • someToast

That looks pretty knock-out-able. I think I’ll stick with my Lego stand.   : )

Actually, I read somewhere (I wish I could remember where) about using a business card holder as a stand so I went out to my local office supply store and scored a very nice holder for about a buck. It’s just a bit unsteady in portrait mode, but it works great in landscape mode.

Are we to assume that iPad owners are not creative enough to work out how to stand their iPad up???

  • Wuss Brillis

Sexy. Needs a clip to attach the toilet paper.

  • aj

    knotch?

    • dwasifar

Yeah, knotch. You cut it with a nife.

Heh, nice. Wish i could afford an iPad to make the stand out of the packaging… lol. great way to reuse packaging, though.

  • benher

Well, this will certainly cushion the blow to my wallet by $100+ replacement power supplies from the Apple store.

The post Cupertino DOESN’T want you to SEE!

Anyone know how to make packaging out of an IPAD?

  • Anonymous

    “shffffffffffffff…clonk..shffffff….bang”

The sound of your expensive toy sliding of its cardboard stand and crashing to the floor.

  • Anonymous

Isn’t that against the Apple user’s agreement?

  • EarthtoGeoff

That’s all well and good for the handymen and -women among us, but how about something that I don’t have to use a “knife” or “my teeth” to make?

Besides, I didn’t buy an iPad because I like messing with things!*

*Full disclosure: I didn’t buy an iPad.
