iOS chief Scott Forstall is out, SVP Jonny Ive moves to head of Interface design—lots of changes at One Infinite Loop. Dan Moren at Macworld writes about the executive shuffle Apple announced late Monday. "It's the kind of drama we in the tech press usually only get from watching Game of Thrones," says Dan. "Consider what Monday’s maneuvers mean for the hardware, software, and services coming out of Cupertino.

I hope it means getting a functional mapping app back.  Buying an iPhone 5 was such a huge mistake…

Probably not for a while. Making their own maps isn’t something they can back away from, so they’re going to have to roost in that nest.

The buzz at the moment is that now that Ive is in charge of software design all this awful skeuomorphic bullshit will go away. I can’t wait for fake software leather to die.

Why not?  Apple has backed away from plenty of other mistakes in the past, haven’t they?

        My sentiments exactly.

Hm. I hope so too, but when you want UI to look less like real stuff you’re better off not turning to a product designer. If anything it makes more sense to expect the opposite.

        • MTBooks

Ive is more or less on record as not liking skeumorphic design. Forstall was a big proponent of it.

Ah good to know – I must admit that although I respect what I know of Ive, it’s not very much. I should probably pick up a book.

Will be interested to see what he does to the department – along with the physical product, Apples UI is huge part of their identity – so it could be quite an exciting time for Apple doodads.

      Huh?

Download Google Maps then. It’s right there, in the App Store.

        Say what? Since when?
(Having dumped my iphone a week ago, I can’t actually check, but last I’d looked there wasn’t one.)

Since the moment Apple release iOS 6. There are a few other options there too if you’d prefer something other than Google Maps.

    In before baseless, breathless speculation.

But it’s a corporate re-shuffle! Surely this excites you like nothing else?

    Melodramatic much?
