Next week, our friends at Noise Pop kick off the 16th year of their independent music, art, and culture festival in San Francisco, and this year's Noise Pop Film line-up is far fucking out.
Here are a few of my picks from more than a dozen cinema events:
* Ollies, Dollies & Drones: Spike Jonze's skate videos from the 1980s to the present day, followed by a Q&S with Mike Carroll and special guests. (For a taste, check out Jonze's pioneering 1991 "Video Days" skate video above.)
* Hardcore Devo Live: A documentary about DEVO's 2014 shows where they performed their earliest, rawest, and most experimental songs written between 1974 and 1977. Special Q&A with filmmaker Keirda Bahruth and DEVO's Jerry Casale! (Trailer below).
* Lance Bangs: Immortal Volume: Portland filmmaker Lance Bangs presents a sneak preview of his new film about the Screaming Females, along with music videos, shorts, concert clips, and other films from his archives. Special solo musical set by "Noun" (Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females).
* Metropolis with live score by Chrome Canyon: Fritz Lang's 1927 masterpiece accompanied by the synth explorations of Chrome Canyon (Morgan Z's solo project).
