On Thursday, San Francisco's groundbreaking contemporary art dance company ODC will premiere a new performance inspired by Chinese artist/activist Ai Weiwei's @Large exhibit now on Alcatraz that pushes on the issues of human rights and freedom of expression.

Titled "The Invention of Wings," the piece will be performed Thursday (3/19) through Sunday (3/22), along with the world premiere of another work, "Dead Reckoning," at the Yerba Center for the Arts. Tickets are available here.

Below, a taste of "The Invention of Wings" recorded on Alcatraz during the opening of Ai Weiwei's @Large exhibition last September.

From ODC's description of The Invention of Wings:

The Invention of Wings is a new work by ODC Artistic Director Brenda Way and Co-Artistic Director KT Nelson that explores issues of censorship, constraint and freedom. It takes as its starting point Way's site-specific installation commissioned for the opening of Ai Weiwei's @Large project on Alcatraz in late 2014. A timely work about resilience, persistence and the enduring power of expression, fragments of The Invention of Wings will be in evidence throughout and beyond the walls of the theater at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Using video by RJ Muna (who took the photo above) and "Weiwei-isms," Wings expands beyond the stage to give voice to the many that cannot use their own.
