This week is the 50th anniversary of Oregon's exploding whale!

On November 9, 1970, a 14 meter-long, 7,300 kg sperm whale washed up on the central Oregon coast. The Oregon Highway Division had the bright idea of exploding the whale using 450 kg of dynamite. The thinking was that the whale bits would then be small enough that animals would handle the clean-up.
