The pioneering roboticists and punk-tinkerers of SRL are relocating after nearly three decades of machine mayhem in San Francisco. Scott Beale posted some photos of fun earlier times at the shop today. Snip from his post, which includes some great photos (including two thumbnailed above):

After 25 1/2 years, the Survival Research Labs shop has moved out of San Francisco, relocating 32 miles north to a new, larger shop in Petaluma. SRL director Mark Pauline mentions four reasons for the move on the SRL blog. Mark is looking for volunteers and interns in the North Bay to help out with the new shop, if interested contact him.

Wow! Is there anything left here in $an Francisco.

Seems like allot of sorry to see it goes post on Laughing Squid lately. It seems like and end of an era up here and we’ll be looked
back upon like Hippys or Burners. I’m sure were in for more giant
bow and arrow sculptures and stores that rip off the 4 hour
    tourists.

At least allot of the sillycan valley still likes to sleep here so we’ll
have still a bit of edge here.

Back in 96ish Some friends brought Mark Pauline to give a speech at my college.

The next day he met, and had brunch with a mes of us. What a guy! His life story reads like an early Gibson Novel (most notably Count Zero).

I look forward to whatever comes out of the new shop!

Somehow I knew before reading the reasons for the move that “We just didn’t feel very welcome…” was going to be a reason.

I’ve spent time in “artsy” places that have become infested with pseudo-intellectual yuppies who force the truly creative out of the area. It’s sad and pathetic.
