Star Wars drawing by Slade, age 6
This wonderful illustration was done by Slade Oakes, age 6. His parents found it in his art pad shortly after Slade's dad brought home the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD.UPDATE: More Slade Oakes art at Flickr here. Damn, he's good.

YYYEEEEAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! I remember the first time my dad sat me down for the Star Wars trilogy.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Look out, Marvel — here comes Slade!
Hmm. Does the POV of that drawing make anyone else think he'd rather be Darth Vader than Luke Skywalker? And note how much shorter DV is...
...kid's after me own heart.
Jean-Paul Sart?
That is adorable.
The first thing that came into my head was: "Don't let him take that to school. He'll get expelled"
That that's the first thing I thought of makes me sad.
"Owww!!!!"
That says it ALL.
You're not my father! That's...improbible!
That is the coolest artwork I have ever seen on Boing Boing. It's not even close.
That sounds like Lucas' dialog alright.
Oakes?
More like Hoax!
I don't buy it.
Welcome to the star wars club kid.
prepare to spend the next year of you life wearing all black cause you want to be Luke skywalker and watching return of the jedi over 400 times.
Ahh child hood was awesome
6 and already knows his LOLZ...
Give me MOAR!!!!
Agreed, TheGibson (#7).
Though, om another tip, what's coolest is that he used X's for Luke's eyes....
Sart Wars ROCKS!
Han Shart First.
Call me a philistine, but Sarte Wars was just boring.
Photoshopped.
Someone call the police! This kid is obviously some sort of philosophy-spouting, fuzzy-blade-wielding terrist!
Reminds me of a funny unsigned postcard my son received. We never figured out who sent it but we guessed it was someone around 6 years old.

I'm going to be the wet blanket here and say that 6 is too young for Star Wars. I think it's revealing that of all the scenes he might've drawn from these movies, all the images that might've stayed with him, he chose the dismemberment.
The SW trilogy (esp. ESB) are my favorite movies of all time, and I can't wait to watch 'em with my kids... but I'm waiting until they're 9-ish.
Maybe my kids are more sensitive to stuff because they haven't watched a lot of TV? I don't know, and everyone's different. Just my take on it.
Looks rather like Arthur vs Black Knight fight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail done with chainsaws.
BLACK KNIGHT: 'Tis but a scratch.
ARTHUR: A scratch? Your arm's off!
BLACK KNIGHT: No, it isn't.
ARTHUR: Well, what's that then?
BLACK KNIGHT: I've had worse.
Awww that's cute and all but I could draw better than that. C'mon people. But then wait a second, perhaps it's an introspection, or his first foray into existentialism as noted by the #5 post above. I mean the imagery is a bit crude here but the statement of fact belies something more profound. You can see how this kid has a budding intellect way beyond his years. Skywalker, with the cauterized knob, in his heroically predictable and determinist ways, is being waged war upon by Sartre in the personification of Vader. Brilliant!
photoshopped may be the best compliment he's ever received.
I have moved over to flickr a small fraction of Slade's artwork from the past 2 years. Enjoy.

proud mum
FAKE! Kids don't really use Z's instead of S's. ;)
Seriously though, I want to see the Sart Wars now, because "Owww!!!!" is the best reaction to losing a limb ever.
I saw my first star wars in the theater when i was 3 or 4, and at age 6 I could spell.
I do however have all those movez now.
I can personally vouch for the provenance of that artwork. It is an original Slade and, yes, he's 6.
what's so great about that?
Note to Slade's parents: do the world a favor, and keep his pencils sharpened, and a big, fresh pad of paper close to him at all times. He's got a great eye, and is obviously talented!
@ osheri better keep an eye out or Todd Goldman will be pinching some of those. The funky little clawed monster thing in blue ink would make an excellent t-shirt!
I agree with WendyFr. Amazing kid. Amazing artist in the larval stage.
I do wonder if he's being bullied. The Luke who's much larger than the DV is why I wonder. Whose arm does he want to cut off?
Or maybe I'm reading my own childhood into this. Ignore me.
I suspect this is actually just a White Ninja strip.
Does Slade made "pew pew voom voom argh you got me" sounds effects when he draws? I bet he does, I used to love doing that shit.
I want to see his rendition of Trogdor.
Wait, huh? It's not April 1...
@#24: "Awww that's cute and all but I could draw better than that."
When you were 6? Lucky you; I hope you put that talent to good use. I'm 38 and I can't draw that well now. :P
Delightful! It reminds me of the drawings my brothers and I did when we were that age. Well, since I was 10 in 1977 for the original Star Wars (and being the oldest, that meant my one brother was 7 and the other was negative 3), I was drawing different things. But yeah, we all got into "Sart Wars" big-time, and I think we all drew Luke getting off-handed at one point or another. I rather disagree with #22 (Anonymous) about the negative aspects of seeing that at such a tender age. The scene is shocking (and was for audience members of all ages), but the violence is neither graphic nor glorified. Kids are naturally fascinated by visceral things, and I see no harm in indulging this fascination within the bounds of reason.
And as an artist myself, if I may speak to the child psychologists here regarding the size difference between Vader & Luke --- Yes, children do tend to draw "important" people larger in stature than "less-important" people. However, in the above drawing, it looks to me more like young Jedi Master Slade just lost proportion a little. It still happens to me, which is why I rough things out in pencil first.

I'm not sure what's funnier:
Medician's rant at being disemvoweled or the fact that he/she doesn't know that his/her original post was disemvoweled.
@lobster: how would you phonetically spell movies? He did a pretty good job with the z.
At least I'm assuming he's trying to say "I got Star Wars movies" and not "I got Star Wars moves" although the latter would be sweeter.
Yo, check me out, I got Star Wars moves! *slices of an arm with lightsaber*
Medician, it's not non-understandable gibberish, it's just difficult-understandable quasi-gibberish. But even without the vowels it reads like you're being a dick.
Medician (various): 1) It's not English, it's LOL. If you can't recognize LOL when you see it, you have a sad, sad life.
2) Pls stp bng dck.
Palindrome 45: I interpreted it as "moves," since he says "one day" and he already has the movies. And 'movez' IS the correct spelling in that sense, dammit! The word he misspelled was 'gotz'; he omitted the 'z' there. :-)
Palindrome 46: Hear, hear.
It's just my child's funny doodle. We got a chuckle out of it that's all. It is not supposed to be an example of his most scholarly work, it is simply a hilarious little insight into his head.
This is dated roughly from the first few weeks of 1st grade, when he was journaling about things he did over the break. So was perfection expected at that point? Of course not. I can assure you now, at the middle of the school year, his spelling is already significantly better. And I don't know about you, but as kids mature more everyday, I treasure these little mistakes as evidence of their development.
Osheri, everyone who doesn't think this is great is a jerk. Ignore them.
As for the spelling...you know what they say: those who matter don't care and those who care don't matter.
Ah, and it seems my interpretation was wrong after all. He was referring to the movies, not predicting that someday he'd "have movez." Just as cute though.
Medician,
You're three for three. After you've read the Moderation Policy, drop Teresa a note if you want your account reinstated.
I was 6 when the original Star Wars (Episode IV) came out in 1977. I was 9 by the time Empire Strikes Back came out, so I guess it was still "age appropriate" for me then, too. The first Star Trek film I ever saw on the silver screen was Star Trek III.
I don't know why, but I missed Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan when they came out, and only later watched them on VHS tape. I did own some of the ST:TMP action figures in the early 1980s, though.
I used to doodle lots of "Sart Wars" art (with similarly questionable spelling) as a kid myself, especially when I discovered colored pencils and drew lots and lots of stick figures with light sabers, and lots of droids and aliens. I think I drew lots of Battlestar Galactica stuff from the 1970s, too...mostly Colonial vipers and Cylon raiders and Base-ships.
Fun stuff, thanks for sharing.
"Slade"? Mama Weer All Crazee Now!
