Mary Roach's TED Talk, "10 things you didn't know about orgasm," will have you scratching your, um, head, in amazement as you learn the particulars of pig-wanking, the delicate matter of explaining foreplay to royalty, and the business of measuring the human penis's muzzle-velocity.

Mary Roach: 10 things you didn't know about orgasm (via MeFi)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

I believe the proper verb for females is shlick.

  • invisibelle

I do love Mary Roach’s books. This is the first time I’m seeing her speak, though. Just as amusing as one would expect.

  • Big Ed Dunkel

No mention of Burt Reynolds having a two-year liaison with one of his hairpieces?

  • Tao

Boy, do I feel proud to be a Dane right now.

Fine but I’ve found quite a few of the TED talks a bit smug – e.g. here, of the 10 things you didn’t know about orgasms, (9) is “it’s hard to study them in a laboratory”, and (10) is “…but it sure is fun”. OK cute gag, but is 20% of her list…

  • benposch

Wow, she’s one hot geek. and i can’t believe i just watched a farmer masturbate a pig on a TED video. amazing.

  • stridulate

her books are brilliant! i always thought she would be a great guest at a party. the perfect mix of insight and playfulness… i’ve never seen video of her, she speaks/acts exactly the way you’d expect from her writing… her excitement about her obsessions is contagious.
damn it, i love that woman!

I’m still digging “Hysterical paroxysm” from another thread.

  • Phrosty

I love TED talks. They’re always interesting.

It’s getting hot in here, Mary.

    God bless Mary Roach.

  • Ocker3

fun, but more of a funny aside than a list of things I really didn’t know and am now better able to live my life now that I know them. But perhaps I just consumed too many sex-tech-science blogs/books/movies and I’m kinda jaded. I didn’t get any “oooh, I had no idea about that” moments on this one.

  • RadioGuy

Brings to mind that scene in Clerks:

It’s important to have a job that makes a difference, boys. That’s why I manually masturbate caged animals for artificial insemination.

  • Gemma

Can you wank a female pig? It seems more of a male verb to me.

  • Laroquod

Hey Anonymous is right, we got cheated out of two items on that list! Gods know I *never* would have clicked through to a TED video entitled, ’8 things you didn’t know about orgasm’…

  • mark_p_s_2

Why didn’t Mary tell of the half a liter money shot?
