The fiendish, ingenious Ukranian steampunk fetish-mask makers Bob Basset had just put up a new model, with integrated goggles, that I'm inordinately fond of.

Leather Steampunk mask and glasses. Кожаная стимпанк маска - очки.

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

The Snowden Principle

Not one of their better works imo. It looks half finished.

  • Propnomicon

Seeing quality work like this makes the gigatons of craptacular “steamjunk” being peddled seem even more pathetic.

What happened to the attention to craftsmanship and materials embodied in some of the first steampunk items? Now there are hordes of imitators duct-taping a brass gear or a cheap octopus finding to Goodwill store castoffs thinking they’ve created art for the ages. I don’t know if I can take one more “Mr. Fitzcrapton’s Aetheric Concentrating Beam Expositor” slapped together from lamp parts and baling wire.

Why must a fad with so much promise end so ignobly?

  • dculberson

These rivet placements are far too accurate for Sand People.

  • Robbo

Geez, Cory, if you wore that you’d look like one of the frickin’ Sandpeople.

  • phillamb168

    Sandpeople FTW?

  • mrsomuch

That looks like the garb from the graphic novel Nausicca – valley of the wind.

    sweeeeet!

  • Robbo

    Oooooh! Nausicaa! Yes!

Fetish: an object or bodily part whose real or fantasied presence is psychologically necessary for sexual gratification and that is an object of fixation to the extent that it may interfere with complete sexual expression.

So, you really like that mask?

I thought more a steampunk Nite Owl II…

  • t3hmadhatter

I was thinking Nite Owl as well…

    I wish thinking Morrowind:

I shall buy this mask so that I can be easily startled, but return in greater numbers.
