Steampunk fetish mask with goggles

The fiendish, ingenious Ukranian steampunk fetish-mask makers Bob Basset had just put up a new model, with integrated goggles, that I'm inordinately fond of.

Seeing quality work like this makes the gigatons of craptacular “steamjunk” being peddled seem even more pathetic.

What happened to the attention to craftsmanship and materials embodied in some of the first steampunk items? Now there are hordes of imitators duct-taping a brass gear or a cheap octopus finding to Goodwill store castoffs thinking they’ve created art for the ages. I don’t know if I can take one more “Mr. Fitzcrapton’s Aetheric Concentrating Beam Expositor” slapped together from lamp parts and baling wire.

Why must a fad with so much promise end so ignobly?
