Dr. Sketchy's 24-hour life drawing session in Los Angeles, January 2-3,

Bob Self says:

Dr. Sketchy's Los Angeles is alternative figure drawing cabaret for artists who like their naked inspiration to be served up with some theatrical showmanship. To get 2010 off to an epic start, the Los Angeles troupe is producing a Dr. Sketchy's Marathon that will run continuously for 26 hours beginning at 8:00 PM on Saturday, January 2nd and ending at 10:00 PM on Sunday, January 3rd. Over a dozen models will be posing in and out of costume over the course of the event, and a roster of noteworthy contemporary artists will be in attendance (including Michael Hussar, who will be creating an alla prima portrait late Saturday night). As usual for Dr. Sketchy's, there will be prizes and surprises. The event will be hosted at Nucleus in Alhambra. Admission is $26 in advance via Dr Sketchy's LA, or $35 at the door. Attendees will be issued wrist bands that will allow them to come and go as they please.

  1. Makes me want to sketch, and I don’t have an artistic bone in my body. But hey, inspiration is inspiration. Right?

  2. Got my ticket when this was first announced! I can’t wait to start the new year with a delirious marathon of creativity!

  3. Pure art and it leaves me jealous. I did two years of life drawing at the Art Institute of Seattle in ’87 and our models looked nothing like that. They were street people with dirt caked on their ankles. They knew how to pose, though.

  4. If you are in NYC, there’s also this at the Society of Illustrators:

I don’t know if this is continuing into the new year, but I suspect it is. I used to go back in the 80s/90s: every night was themed and the model would have appropriate props, which would sometimes be ignored. The Society is a great place anyway, and it has an extensive research collection.

  5. Do they ever have mail models? I live in NYC and it seems from their ads and their websites that it is exclusively women. Pass.

  6. RE: Anynomous.

While Sketchy’s NYC definitely has fewer male models (they unfortunately don’t attract the audiance female models do), we certainly have them. We’ll be having the amazing Nik Sin posing on January 16th as Toulouse Lautrec. Here are pics of some other great guys we’ve had in the past

  7. Dr. Sketchy’s Los Angeles sometimes features male models. There will be two male models during the 26 hour marathon. In 2010, the split will likely be about 80 percent female and 20 percent male.
