This is some pretty groovy fish-themed cutlery. I'd even consider getting a set, if I hadn't committed to a crazy-but-ambitious plan to collect a ton of mismatched, ornate silverware from yardsales and charity shops and then make it all match by getting all the handles powder-coated with matching materials (and yes, this may turn out to be ridiculous, but I'm willing to give it a shot!).

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

The Snowden Principle

We have these forks and spoons! Courtesy of a Japanese wedding (at which they give *you* a present simply for showing up). The kids adore them and will eat anything provided they can eat it with the “fish forks” — and jackbird, you’ll be pleased to know that magically nothing collects in the eyeholes.

Just make sure you have enough for the whole family. When I was a kid my family somehow acquired ONE fork with a fish tailed handle we called the “fish fork”. There were about 12 kids at the time and we fought over that fork every meal. I think my Dad finally had it destroyed.

Yes, but will there be “Darwin” cutlery with little feet sticking out the side?

  • IronEdithKidd

These are awesome, but at $40/setting they won’t be hitting our table anytime soon. Dang it.

The holes and bumps are likely to be a breeding ground for all kinds of nasty bugs…

  • Cayobo

I remodeled our Key West kitchen to resemble a galley on a schooner (bathroom as the beach w/sand & shells embedded on the lower walls) and this set of cutlery will work perfectly. No kids here, but I’m sure our dinner guests will get a kick out of it.

  • Anony Mouse

This is genius. It seems to be an exploration of the nature of awfulness. I seriously can’t tell if this is amazing or atrocious. It seems to occupy the precise balance point between the two. That said, my personal taste is quite heavily biased towards the ‘bad’ end of the spectrum, but that’s part of the fun. Is it a conceptual art piece?

Cory I like your plan better – let us know how it goes!

Shouldn’t it come with a fish knife.

  • jackbird

…and the caked-on crud in the eyeholes after each wash adds to the flavor next time!
