These novelty "Embarrassing Photo Protective Sunglasses" make you look like you've had your eyes blacked out by a censor bar: "Worried a paparazzo took a shot of you doing that thing you do that nobody knows about, because it would get you fired, arrested or worse?" They used to be sold by Urban Outfitters, but appear to have been discontinued.

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Anyone that went to a punk or New Wave show in the early to mid-80s have seen these shades before. Not new.

  • frankieboy

Polysics have been wearing these for donkeys years

  • PeaceLove

Hey! These are the perfect complement to David Friedman’s pre-pixelated clothes! http://www.ironicsans.com/2006/03/idea_prepixelated_clothes_for_1.html

  • Donald Petersen

Worn by discriminating rockers since at least 1981.

That nose-piece is horrific. The chance of accidentally plunging it into one of your eyes after stumbling or running into someone seems way too high.

I would want to redesign that piece before I tried wearing these.

I saw one at the end of the Wikileaks/censorship panel at HAR2009, where one of the panelists received one of these.

At least we know the bikini version will be invented by the year 2999.

  • mkultra

I really, desperately need a pair of these. Perhaps several pairs.

They are still sold in stores (next to the registers at the Urban Outfitters I work at), just not online.

This idea was first done by fashion house Maison Martin Margiela.

Their web site is pretty boing-worthy:

I’m sensing the arrival of a matching bikini.

    • kmoser

The bikini version will be a piece of cardboard printed with a pixellated pattern.

You know the last time I did this I got a restraining order issued against me…… Now people are paying for it?!?!?!?!??!

I did this for a halloween costume about ten years ago. Prior art baby! Anyway, I made mine from a regular pair of sunglasses, some carboard, duct tape and a sharpie.
