      Thanks a lot, Brian!  7 comments and half of them are me! :)   As for a howto, this piece would be pretty tricky to document. Perhaps if I write a book one day, as I hope to, I could include it.   There are a bunch of good books about automata, some with plans, that are available. You can also check out the quarterly column I write for Cabaret Mechanical Theatre online, which offers tips on making wood automata.
