[Video Link] From Laughing Squid: "To announce the grand opening of Westfield Stratford City, which will soon be “the largest urban shopping centre in Europe”, Westfield created this fun short film, 100 YEARS / STYLE / EAST LONDON. The film, directed by Jake Lunt with The Viral Factory, amazingly gives the run-down of 100 years of East London fashion, dance and music in just 100 seconds."

The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

I don’t think military uniform counts as fashion on anyone other then Lemmy.

    • http://twitter.com/claudiagray Claudia Gray

That’s why the guy dances off during that part — men’s fashion took a break for a few years there!

  • Donald Petersen

Was that a quick shot of Blue Monday at 1:20?

    Fab.

I am reminded of the Dennis Miller Millennial routine he did (for what show, I can’t remember) where he changed clothing at each segment, and wore the clothes, and used the slang from, each decade of the 20th century. Pretty impressive, even by pre-9/11 Dennis Miller standards.

  • narddogz

I didn’t see the hooded-sweatshirt with face mask and flat-screen TV accessory look which was so popular a few weeks ago.

    Hang on…

Now, I’m in no way saying this is a bad bit of film. But Westfield Stratford? Isn’t that the shopping centre that’s built on the entrance to London’s Olympic site, that all visitors to the 2012 Olympics will have to walk through? Isn’t it a giant mall, sucking the individuality out of an area once thriving with artists, and replacing it with a plastic heart of commerce?

    Well, yeah.

    • Tzctboin

      Area once thriving with artists?

      Con artists perhaps…

  • mtdna

The hem style was 5/16″ off in second #56.
But seriously, can you imagine the work that went into that??? It must have taken ages.

  • chrism

Isn’t this an advert? Yes, nice work, film guys. But that Westfield mall (owned by a giant Australian company) is about as relevant to the history of East London as Sir Oswald Mosley is to Rupert Murdoch. Oh, hang on…

  • Antlan

    The 1950′s was shortchanged a bit…

  • Antinous / Moderator

    Jeez, the 90s were depressing.

    • Donald Petersen

I didn’t even recognize them.  Did they contribute anything at all to the fashion lexicon, other than Hypercolor?

Should have had a bunch of sandbags piled up with a sign on them that said “Danger: UXB” for the 1940 and 1941 shots and maybe the had at least the guy in a RAF uniform to honor those who made it through The Battle of Britain and The Blitz.

  • waetherman

This is the video we should be sending out on the next Voyager

    • http://www.facebook.com/daen.de.leon Daen de Leon

      There’s a much, much easier approach ….

      *hacks Arecibo into transmit mode*
      *tappitty tap … PLAY*

Done.  That will overtake Voyager I in about 16.12 hours, and the Vogons will be replying with “1,000,000,000 years of utter Vogon slobbishness” sometime next century.

  • pjcamp

    I’m so old.

  • dttri

Strange that the only two decades I couldn’t distinguish from each other,
are those I am supposed to know best: the 90s and 2000s.

    Ad or not, nice work.

  • neurolux

I think at post-flannel ’90s, fashion screeched to a halt.

  • http://www.kmoser.com kmoser

Awesome. Let us not forget the evolution of dance.

I’m pretty sure I saw punks dancing disco.

  • patelanjali

But Westfield Stratford? Isn’t that the shopping centre that’s built on the entrance to London’s Olympic site.

  • larwood

Uh, so why is the soldier at 00:30 wearing a US uniform? Looks like 101st Airborne to me. That’s bang out of order, as we say in the East End.

Still, cheers for giving this soulless behemoth some free publicity, BB.

    • WhyBother

I also wasn’t aware that hippies were a significant fixture of London in
the 60s.  Specifics aside, the concept is solid and the execution
      impressive.

  • http://halfbakedmaker.org Robert Baruch

    Punk came before disco?

    • rimrender

      Oi! came before disco though.

  • rimrender

If this is East London fashion, where’s the Skins, Mods, Suedes, and Rudies of the late 60s-80s?

  • Ian Irving

nicely done! music, hats / hair, clothing and dance.  needs an annotated version with decades, trends and events highlighted.

Didnt see any West Ham jerseys
