Army needs oyster shells

If you have 4,000 bushels of empty oyster shells, the US Army will pay you $15,000 for them. (Thanks, David!)

    I wonder what its for. I believe they used to burn oyster shells and use the ashes as a primitive chemical weapon since it causes blindness when it gets in your eyes, but then I could be totally misremembering a Sharp novel.

    Hmm. When my old neighbourhood was a fishing village, they used broken oyster shells in the streets where others might have used gravel.  Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis.
