Unpublished Timothy Leary manuscript for auction

Timothy Leary wrote The Periodic Table of Energy while he was in Vacaville state prison in 1974. "The work explores 'correspondences among the Periodic Table of Elements, the Neurogenetic Theory of Evolution, the Tarot, the I Ching, [and] the Zodiac.' The 203-page typescript is profusely annotated and edited in manuscript, and illustrated with images, advertisements and articles clipped from newspapers and magazines. Originating from the papers of Leary’s one-time wife and collaborator Joanna Harcourt-Smith, whose name appears with Leary’s on the title page, the manuscript represents a major discovery in countercultural literature." Bonhams estimates it'll sell for $30k - $50k.

  Leary’s simple and straightforward autobiography (Flashbacks) is one of the nicest reads of the last few decades, however I’ve found his other non-fiction and “fantasy fiction” to be rather dry and unreadable. He wasn’t the best writer and that’s a shame. Leary excelled at speaking and his many recorded talks and debates (see Leary VS Liddy or Leary and Ram Dass) are marvelous – Leary’s voice contained an enthusiasm his typewritten pages sorely lacked.

     Given the accolades and respect that Dr. Leary’s Interpersonal Circumplex (Circuit model) is afforded — to this day — I would say that, yes, this manuscript ‘seems legit’.     I just hope that whoever throws down for ‘ownership’ of the work does the species a favour and sets up free downloads.
