There's an awesome explainer/infographic post at Global Voices that breaks down "how the 700-plus members of our diverse, global and entirely virtual community pull together stories."

Each day, section leaders, editors and volunteer authors and translators "work together across borders, time zones and language barriers to amplify the best of citizen and social media, report on online freedom of expression and support others in joining the global conversation."

Check it out here.

Full disclosure: I'm proud to serve as a board member of GV, and support the excellent, timely, and risk-taking journalism the organization enables throughout the world. I hope you'll consider donating this holiday charity season.

Boing Boing editor/partner and tech culture journalist Xeni Jardin hosts and produces Boing Boing's in-flight TV channel on Virgin America airlines (#10 on the dial), and writes about living with breast cancer. Diagnosed in 2011. @xeni on Twitter. email: xeni@boingboing.net.

Hackers prepare for first "national holiday" in their honor

  • Boundegar

Do the idea guy and the writer/translator earn any kind of paycheck?

    • http://twitter.com/EthanZ Ethan Zuckerman

Nope. Roughly 97% of the people involved with GV are volunteers. There’s a small paid editorial and administrative staff.

      • Boundegar

This seems exploitative to me.  Am I just too cynical to see the joy of smart, creative people working hard and not getting paid?  The world is filled with opportunities for that, and somebody else is often taking advantage.

Exqueeze me but I think I’ll decide when I’m being exploited. Have you ever done something because you believe in it?

    • http://twitter.com/JanetGunter Janet Gunter

I don’t want to be paid – that would change everything.
