The Life of astronaut Sally Ride: Miles O'Brien on PBS NewsHour

As noted in an earlier Boing Boing post today, Miles O'Brien is hosting a Kennedy Center event in the nation's capital tonight, to honor the life and legacy of astronaut Sally Ride. She died in 2012 of pancreatic cancer. This just in: here's Miles on PBS NewsHour tonight, talking about his encounters with Ride.

  1. Of  all the fictional characters who have tried their hand at existence in the real world, Star Trek character Miles O’Brien is the most successful.  Good on you, Miles!

        1. Figures. I would hope for some retroactive sanity, but I haven’t observed much of that in the world so far.

        1. Maybe they’re homosexual, but they are definitely not gay. Having been out for 41 years, I’m quite comfortable with revoking their status.

          1. Not in the least. She’s a public figure whose life gave gay youth the message that you can be an astronaut… if you live in the closet. Her life choices are a message of self-loathing and suicide for gay youth. As someone who’s been out since the 70s and taken the consequences of being honest, I find her cowardly and despicable.
