Muppet crackdown in Times Square


Costumed characters in New York City have a reputation for pressuring tourists into paying them money, leading police to post flyers around Times Square informing visitors, in several languages, that they are under no obligation to do so.

  1. Do these guys pay royalties to the companies that own the rights to these characters? If not, asking for money is asking for trouble. Given the amount of money mentioned in the article ($20-$40 a day) it doesn't seem likely that they're securing the rights.

  3. Not that I am in support of taking away peoples right to work in one form or another - but I am a little glad about this. A couple years back when I visited Times Square I remember a particularly creepy Elmo who appeared to be feeling up every teenager he/she was posing with.

  4. Wasn't there a video last year of a sweary anti-semitic Elmo?
