Cops who ate "candy bars" in pot raid video charged with petty theft, vandalism

The Orange County Weekly reports that the O.C. District Attorney's office (OCDA) has filed charges against three of the police officers who were seen in a widely-shared surveillance video munching what viewers presumed to be marijuana-infused edibles. The munchies mysteriously hit the officers right in the middle of a May 26, 2015 raid on Sky High Holistic, a medical marijuana dispensary in Santa Ana, CA.

The video was first published online by OC Weekly last June. In the video, officers destroy cameras, and can clearly be seen passing around what look like candy bars, cracking jokes about feeling "light-headed," and tossing darts after finishing their stolen snacks. The "Sky High Cops" became internet-famous and the subject of scornful news reports worldwide.

More at OC Weekly:

Yet in its official announcement of the misdemeanor charges filed today, the OCDA claims there is no evidence that any of the Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) officers shown in the video consumed marijuana products during the raid. Instead, they are being prosecuted for causing intentional damage to "legally" disabled video cameras and eating "Detour Simple protein bars and Mrs. Thinsters cookies" that were not marijuana-laced products on sale at the dispensary, but were simply "snacks available to staff."

Oooooooookaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy. Sounds legit.

The officers named in the OCDA announcement as facing petty theft charges for eating what was absolutely not marijuana edibles are Brandon Matthew Sontag (31), Nicole Lynn Quijas (37) and Jorge Arroyo (32).

Sontag faces an additional count of vandalism for damaging disabled video cameras by smashing their lenses into the corner of a display case and cash register, as you can see in this video.
