Ghost of Tsushima, a Kurosawa-esque samurai simulator dripping with style, was one of my favorite games of the PS4 generation. Its sequel Ghost of Yotei has been one of my favorites of this generation — challenging a group of rogue samurai to an honorable duel and cutting them down one gloriously bloody sword stroke at a time never gets old, and the stylized feudal Japan is always breathtaking.
While Yotei improves on its predecessor in nearly every way, Tsushima had one thing over it: Legends, a co-op side mode where you and three friends play through fantastical tales embellishing the more grounded singleplayer campaign. I missed not having the option at launch, but now, months later, Yotei's very own Legends mode is here. While singleplayer protagonist Atsu is a jack of all trades to an almost comical degree, in Legends you'll have to be just one part of a well-coordinated team to stand a chance against the army of demons ravaging Hokkaido.
Ghost of Yotei: Legends is out today, so go play it. I've only squeezed in a few games since its release hours ago, but the slick, precise combat is as rewarding as ever, and the vistas are even more jaw-dropping now that they're fully unshackled from the bounds of reality. This is going to keep Yotei on my hard drive for a long time.
