Check out this massive (180cm X 190cm) pirate ship wall-decal for your kiddies' room. A perfect way to get the li'l downloaders off on the right foot. Or peg. Link (via Babygadget)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

The anchor pillow is my favorite part!

  • ableto

might be able to buy the paint cheaper but then its there till you muck around re painting. oh dont know about you but i know i dont have time to paint something that detailed.

  • Antinous

I painted a sailboat scene once in a walk-in closet, or as they’re called in San Francisco, a child’s bedroom. It pretty much took all day.

  • VitaminCM

Forget my kids room. I’m hanging that on the wall behind my computer.
It’s a little more appropriate there.

  • pez

Or you could build a real pirate-ship bed….

Also: A HUNDRED AND SIXTY DOLLARS!

That said, they handily include the ‘swatches’.. aka a printable thumbnail of the original design.
If one was so inclined, and had access to an art supplies shop and a printer, a cheaper version might be forthcoming :)

  • artbot

The price was my first (horrified) reaction, too. I could make something similar for $30 or less. More work, sure, but A HUNDRED AND SIXTY FREAKIN’ DOLLARS?!

I like the anchor pillow, too.

  • ableto

i think the room looks good. i know my twin boys would love the ship on their wall. blik is very small so not worth the $.

  • bookninja

The parent in me cries foul at this. Loose oars in a kid’s room (at least in a room for a kid young enough to have an anchor pillow and wall stickers of a preschool-looking pirate ship)? Next to a mirror? Methinks a trip to the ship’s leech will soon be in order, yarr.

  • calittle

There’s also BLIK wall decals. They might be slightly less expensive than the pirate ship, and they have ROBOTS!

$160 buys A LOT of paint. Cool idea though.

  • Takuan

    four gallons of good stuff?

  • dculberson

Ehh, who knows if the oars are loose? Maybe they’re glued or screwed the the wall. Maybe the mirror is polycarbonate.

Also, I’m definitely not a kid, but I’d love to have that pirate ship on my wall. I’m not keen on the anchor pillow, though.

  • Antinous

I thought that I was the only one who’s noticed that paint prices have quadrupled in a decade. And that blue tape that you need to mask the shapes without ripping off the base coat? $6 per roll.

  • ameklite

    Nice giant work!!

    Wall decal for kids room

  • Takuan

it’s a kids room, ya gotta use the lead based enamel for durability

  • brandonc

Great: Kids horseplaying grab one of the oars, which hits the heavy brass mirror thingy, which falls and cracks a skull or breaks a shoulder: oops!

  • fibreoptik

    /agreed
this cartoonish pirate ship decal thingy is pretty cool :)
