Sharna sez, "Already known for her stand against criminalizing music downloaders, now Lennox has given DJEarworm her multi-track masters to mash up. The resulting track 'Backwards/Forwards' is stunning and is featured on his site and hers and on both artists' youtube channels."

Annie Lennox: Backwards/Forwards (Thanks, Sharna!)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

Truly, Annie Lennox will go down in music history as one of the few true artists.

There are certain people who are doing on Earth exactly what they were meant to do.

Ms. Lennox is one of these few.

  • Takuan

    gorgeous, gorgeous and gorgeous.

  • relgin

Dag! That really knocked me out. Earworm did an amazing job and normally I abhor mash-ups.

Stars on 45 keep on turning in my mind…
I love love love Annie, and I want her to have my children and I’ve bought nearly all of her music but I think this was frankly a bit of a mess. Give me the tapes and I could do better really. Annie’s voice is amazing and deserved better presentation than this track.

“Would I lie to you/would I lie to you honey/now would I say something that wasn’t true…” – played at 11 on the amp. The Best. Ever.

I think Annie needs a track with her voice, synth and a brass orchestra again. Then she will will rock the world again!

The fact that Annie Lennox trusted DJ Earworm with all of her master recordings shows how highly she thinks of him and of the mashup genre.

As usual, she is way ahead of the game, collaborating with an artist (much like herself) who works outside of the traditional music business.

The result is Annie’s lifetime of work beautifully woven by Earworm both musically and visually – an entirely new stunning song/video created from existing favorites.

This is the future of music as we know it…people are waking up.

That reawakened a passion for Annie Lennox that I hadn’t even realized had gone dormant. What a wonderful surprise.

I’m on my third listen. Thank you, DJEarworm, whoever you are, and thank you Annie Lennox for being so generous with your material. I think I will find a record store tonight and stock up for some weekend listening.

“Lush eccentricity” is my new favorite phrase.

One of the most compelling arguments for open information that I have ever been exposed to.

    Awesomeness!

Thanks, Annie, DJ Earworm, Cory and Sharna for sharing!

  • FoetusNail

I love a good mashup, and that was indeed stunning.

I think “stunning” is an understatement. Phenomenal.

  • mn_camera

    Wow.

  • AnoniMouse

That was GLORIOUS. The mash of the videos show her lush eccentricity in a way that they don’t quite convey if watched separately.

  • technogeek

Beautiful job. My main regret is that I haven’t heard any of the originals often enough to recognize the components being reused.

Having the original tracks to work with — so this is really a fresh production — makes a huge difference. Having the creativity to do it makes even more difference. Props to the Earworm!

Supposedly Annie also has an entire recording of the “Bare” album sung by her in Spanish. The version of Loneliness sung in Spanish is on her MySpace page, and even without knowing Spanish I’d say it is better than the original English version. I’d buy it. I guess the record label doesn’t agree.

  • rhinny

    SO GOOD!

  • Talia

Sublimely surreal eye and ear candy. If there were somewhere to buy the music mix, I totally would.

  • FLG

This is just so freaking cool. I’ve been listening to DJ Earworm’s mashups since BoingBoing posted a link to the Best of Bootie cds. Great stuff.

  • Tenn

    Ohhhh.

Now I’m on another! Annie-binge. I have had the most enormous crush/obsession on this woman since I was twelve. And I don’t see it ending any time soon.

Thanks, DJ Earworm. I loved listening to this and catching clips of my favorite songs, then having to scuttle off and listen to them all.

Ms. Lennox is a wonderful woman- a brilliant artist, and her SING campaign is truly warm-hearted. I hope to one day see her live.

  • shadowfirebird

The lovely thing about this is, if you hate it you can blame DJ Earworm; if you love it you can praise both of them.

I love it. I think it’s great fun, but wouldn’t make a “single” — whatever that is these days…

That was the most unabashedly awful thing I’ve heard in recent memory. It’s so bad I wouldn’t have even bothered commenting except I’ve always loved Annie Lennox’s work. To hear it treated with such disrespect is simply shocking. I finally understand why people hated The Phantom Menace and Andres Serrano’s treatment of crucifixes.
