I’m confused, how does one do a “limited edition” of a photograph? Did the artist destroy his negatives?

Yes, very probably. Or if digital, delete the file. I suppose one could just “retire” the image and promise-cross-my-heart-hope-to-die to never make another print of it.

It means that the photograph agrees to never print his photos again… in the same dimensions. But he could release another limited edition (fixed number of prints, with different dimensions, usually numbered and signed).
