A joint letter from the founders of Yahoo, Netscape, Google, Blogger, Twitter, the Internet Archive, Wikipedia, the Huffington Post, PayPal, Mozilla, Flickr, YouTube, Craigslist, eBay, and other pieces of Internet history tells Congress: "Let's not deny the next generation of entrepreneurs and founders the same opportunities we all had." Have you called Congress yet?

  • illicitizen

I called congress. They said they couldn’t hear me over the roar of awesome money from MPAA, IFPI lobbyists.

    • firedup

The be fair, those zillion dollar bills are loud as hell.

Just called mine! The intern on the other end said that lots of people have been calling against SOPA. He claimed the “vast majority” of calls are against it.  KEEP UP THE CALLS EVERYONE! Let them know we’re against this!!

This reads as a who’s who of services we’ll still all be using in three years.

Whither facebook, oh circus of banner interactions and privacy invasions?

  • John Burt

I guess Apple, Microsoft, Adobe and many other members of the Business Software Alliance, which helped write early drafts of this crap are are nobodies?

We need to pressure not only the politicians, but the corporations that seem to think this is OK. Maybe Xeni should have a word with Tim Cook…

Wikipedia is currently considering shutting down completely for a while as protest against the law, much like the Italian Wikipedia successfully did a while back. I can’t imagine a better way to bring public attention and public pressure to stop this god-awful law than that. There aren’t enough content lobbying cash in the world that could do as much as the entire country having to go “What the hell is this law, and why is my Wikipedia shut down? WHAT DID YOU DO, CONGRESS?” I really hope they do it.

You know it’s going to be bad when your Democratic Rep sends  you a letter with this copy: “As you may know, the PROTECT IP Act would provide law enforcement with important tools to stop websites dedicated to online piracy and the sale of counterfeit goods. The PROTECT IP Act would also facilitate legal proceedings taken by the Attorney General and the Department of Justice against foreign nationals that are associated with delinquent domain names that harm American internet users. …Please be assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind … ”

No you won’t you’ve already made up your mind.

Yeah, I was similarly surprised to hear from Michael Bennet (D) Senator for Colorado in a form letter that he supported SOPA. Very disappointing. But sadly not surprising.

  • milkman

Between false wars, the need for an Occupy movement, banks getting bailouts, unemployment at an all time high, and now SOPA, it is clear that the ENTIRE political system is fucked.  Unfortunately, I don’t have the money to buy a good system the way big business seems to.  It’s all very disheartening when every rabbit hole has another corruption in it.  Can we just nuke the system and start the fuck over please?

    • Finnagain

And you didn’t even list Citizens United. Truly, we are being screwed left right and center.

      Occupy Everything!!

  • Brainspore

I don’t care what you all think, I like soup and I’m not gonna stop ordering it at Mexican restaurants just because everybody thinks it’s evil all of a sudden.

I demand full disclosure.  How many cans is Big Sopa giving you to say that?

      • Finnagain

        The sopa is a lie.

      • Brainspore

I think you mean Sopa Grande. And I also get free tortilla chips on the side.

      That’s a load of tripe.

Called and written, called and written, called and written… its extraordinarily sad and disappointing. I can’t help but feel completely disenfranchised. It represents all that is wrong with our political system and the vision of future it paints that is further erosion and abridgment of our civil liberties. It actually makes my stomach hurt. Seriously.
