Best Tony performance celebrates a young girl's gay sexual awakening

Fun Home is new Broadway musical about cartoonist Alison Bechdel and her complicated relationship with her closeted gay father.

Not only did the show take home the award for Best Musical at Sunday's Tony Awards, it also stole the broadcast with the best performance of the night.

In this simple but remarkably compelling number, 11-year-old actress Sydney Lucas (who plays Bechdel as a child) sings about discovering her sexuality as she sees a confident butch woman enter a diner in "Ring Of Keys." It's pretty cool that this aired on a major award show on network TV.

Also cool: The song was written by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori, who just became the first all-female team to win the Tony for Best Original Score.
