American toddlers have shot 23 people this year—mostly themselves.

Last year, a Washington Post analysis found that toddlers were finding guns and shooting people at a rate of about one a week. This year, that pace has accelerated. There have been at least 23 toddler-involved shootings since Jan. 1, compared with 18 over the same period last year. In the vast majority of cases, the children accidentally shoot themselves. That's happened 18 times this year, and in nine of those cases the children died of their wounds.

Doubtlessly these toddlers will kill many more before they are stopped.

It correlates strongly to state-level gun storage laws, reports WaPo. States with lax ones see lots of toddler shootings; even states with high levels of gun violence in general see few toddler gun injuries when they enact such laws. The NRA claims gun storage laws are an attack on individual liberty, and it not only opposes them but sues city governments that enact them.

Some people will own guns. Lock the shit up folks. This is fucking stupid.

  2. Won't somebody please think of the children's Second Amendment rights?!

  3. I barely trust my three year old son with the entire clade of stick-like objects. I have seen him assault other kids with stuff as mundane as socks.

I am reminded of a stand-up joke I heard once: " The only reason your children haven't killed you yet is that they aren't strong enough."

  4. At the very least, we need to keep them out of the country until our representatives can figure out what is going on.

  5. No, it's not, which is why we constantly improve the safety of cars. They keep revising what a "5-start" safety rating is, so that cars keep getting safer. They're adding features like back-up cameras and obstacle warnings to warn about hitting things you can't see. Every effort is taken to make that number lower every year.

So people change the zoning laws so that pools need to be behind a locked fence. They conduct awareness campaigns to tell people that your kid can drown given even one minute out of sight, with an inch of water nearby. They make a concerted effort to lower the number of fatal accidents.

And the gun lobby does... what? What do they do to reduce the number of kids killed by their parents' guns?
