Types and uses of personal information
In order to post comments and mark favorite posts on our Websites, you must first create an account with a username and password; we use these to provide you with access to your profile and comments. Our registration system also requires that you provide a valid email address; we use that to confirm your account. Accounts in our system are perpetual. If you change the information in your account, our stored data backups may include your original information for up to six months. Separately, when you email us, we retain your address and correspondence. We use these to raise and respond to issues and inquiries of all types.
Information Sharing and Disclosure
Aggregate Information (non-personally identifiable)
We share aggregated demographic information about our reader base with our third-party advertising partner [see "Third-party Advertisers"], including browser information and traffic statistics. We do not link this data to individual readers' accounts or personally identifiable information.
Personally identifiable information:
We do not share personally identifiable information with third parties, with one limited exception: we may disclose personally identifiable information about you if we have a good faith belief that doing so is required by law, such as pursuant to a subpoena or other judicial or administrative order.
We use both short-term cookies and persistent cookies. A short-term cookie expires within a limited period of time. We use session cookies so that readers with accounts can navigate and contribute to our site without logging in multiple times over a short period of time. A persistent cookie remains on your hard drive for an extended period of time. We use persistent cookies to recognize account holders and present the site accordingly. You can remove cookies by following directions provided in your Internet browser's "help" file.
If you reject cookies, you may still use our site, but your ability to use some areas of our site, such as comments, will require logging in for each action you want to take.
The ads appearing on this Web site are delivered to readers by Federated Media, our advertising partner. Federated Media, and companies it contracts with to serve some ads, may place or recognize unique cookies on your browser and use information about your visits to this and other Web sites in order to provide advertisements on this site and other sites about goods and services. The information collected does not include personally identifiable information like your name, address, email address or telephone number. It does include IP addresses, though these are not tied to individual readers' accounts. If you would like more information about Federated Media's practices, contact firstname.lastname@example.org .
Links to Other Sites
It should go without saying, but we'll say it anyway: this Website contains links to other sites that are not owned or controlled by Happy Mutants. Please be aware that we, Happy Mutants, are not responsible for the privacy practices of such other sites. This privacy statement applies only to information collected by this Web site.
Our linking policy is outlined here in this post.
Changes in This Privacy Statement
Check out TRUSTe. Their very useful Model Privacy Disclosures document was one of the resources we tapped in crafting our policies.
Boing Boing is supported by advertising. We don't do pay-per-post and we are always transparent when a sponsor is involved. The following are some of the most common kinds of sponsorships and advertising opportunities available on Boing Boing, through our ad sales partner Federated Media:
Sponsored sections, themes, or categories: A marketer sometimes sponsors a category, section, or series of posts within a particular theme. At the top of those posts, the sponsor of that section is identified. Of course, the sponsor won't have any editorial input, guidance, or approval, of what we post about.
Widgets: A marketer sponsors a technology, widget or interface feature on the site that we think enhances the BB experience for you.
Advertisers' Web sites: As part of a campaign, one or more of us might do some writing on a marketer's Web site. Banner ads may promote our contributions and link to the advertiser's site. Sometimes though, we'll also link from the blog to what we've written just like we do when our stuff appears in any of the other online publications where we contribute. We never promise that to a marketer though. So if we do link to our writing on a marketer's site, it's just because we're proud of our work and we hope you might dig it too.
Sponsored videos: A marketer sponsors a series of videos on a particular theme or over a given time period. That sponsorship may include interstitial or embedded ads within the video and/or branding of the video player. Sponsors have no control over the editorial content. If a sponsor asks Boing Boing Video to produce a "standalone video ad" and provides input or direction on the content, we'll be sure to disclose that.
Contests: A marketer may sponsor a contest on the site. We hope you win!
Afilliate Links: We participate in the affiliate program at Amazon. When you make a purchase on Amazon after clicking an Amazon link on this site, we collect a small portion of the sale from Amazon.
Advertorial: Advertisements that are presented in an editorial format will be prominently marked as ads.
Traditional banner ads: We have strict guidelines on the banner advertisements that we accept. Expanding banners are only delivered to each browser once daily. Animated ads can't be longer than 15 seconds. Audio must be user-initiated. And of course, no pop-ups or pop-unders. Unfortunately, ads that break those rules sometimes do slip through our automated system. So if you see a banner ad that violates this policy, please let us know by emailing and we'll get the ad removed.
