I've seen this kind of jittery-but-effective 3D effect before. In fact, you can take old stereoscope cards and make looping Gifs with the two images. A new iPhone app called Slide uses the same principle, but takes out the grunt work.
Slide is a brand new way to create 3D photos with your iPhone. Compose your shot then move your device in a smooth and swift horizontal motion to capture. Tap the subject of your photo and it magically becomes 3D. Ready to share as a looping GIF or video to Instagram, iMessage, Twitter, Facebook and more.
Ian Hubert is the host of the “Lazy Tutorials – For Lazy People, By Lazy People” YouTube channel, which has 60-second videos of Hubert using Blender to create 3D models and textures of various things like air conditioners and bulletin boards. He makes it look easy (I know it’s not), and he’s also funny. [via […]
Starting in 2007, photographer and visual effects artist Dimitris Tsalkanis has been building a digital 3D model of ancient Athens. The result is an immersive historical recreation where everyone online is invited. How did Tsalkanis handle this Herculean (rather, Heraklean) task? He learned as he went. From Sarah Rose Sharp’s article about Ancient Athens 3D […]
Scientists attached 3D glasses to cuttlefish to better understand the molluscs’ visual perception as it relates to their ability to attack prey. They were treated to 3D screenings of shrimp while the University of Minnesota researchers studied their behavior. I wonder if, like me, the 3D movies gave them headaches. From the University of Minnesota: […]
Unlike the unquestioned effectiveness of a solid strip of duct tape, you never quite know what you’re going to get when you try to repair something with glue, do you? Whether it’s the material itself that you’re gluing or how much glue you apply or how long you let it sit before testing, there’s always […]
Now that we’re past July 4th, we’re truly turning smack into the sharpened teeth of the summer heatwave season. As temperatures and humidity spike, it just makes all the rest of the nation’s current problems that just tiniest bit more irritating, doesn’t it? Hey, we’re all in this together. So if we can help chill […]
While we obviously don’t ever want to lose sight of exactly why we’re all wearing face coverings now in the first place, it’s also impossible to ignore that masks have already started to evolve in the public consciousness. The mask started as simply a means of combating infection. Then, it became an avenue of free […]
