The film was initiated as an experimental series of tests in Zhestkov.Studio. After some research, we realized that the beauty and visual power of these explorations could be transformed into an art film rather than be a series of tests. For a couple of months, programmers and artists at Zhestkov.Studio developed different approaches and played with the infinite possibilities of refractions and reflections. We developed over 1000 tools and principles of working with light and refractive/reflective surfaces. Coders wrote dozens of lines in Python to achieve some of the effects and behaviors of light. In the end, we produced some truly amazing results. Light and refraction in reality can behave only in one way in one condition, but in the digital world, where we don't have real-world restrictions, we can animate every condition and step further into the understanding of light and color.
Yok and Sheryo are New York-based artists who created “Get the Money,” a large porcelain shrine that’s a comment on avarice in Singapore and around the globe. Note: strobe effects in the first 10 seconds of the video.
Photographer Drew Gardner created a photo series depicting descendants of historical figures, each posed as their ancestors. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Napoleon Bonaparte, Charles Dickens… It’s surprising how uncanny the resemblances often are. But none are so fascinating as his portrait of Shannon LaNier, the great^6-grandson of Thomas Jefferson. The recreation was based on the famous […]

Whether it’s the material itself that you’re gluing or how much glue you apply or how long you let it sit before testing, there’s always […]
Now that we’re past July 4th, we’re truly turning smack into the sharpened teeth of the summer heatwave season. As temperatures and humidity spike, it just makes all the rest of the nation’s current problems that just tiniest bit more irritating, doesn’t it? Hey, we’re all in this together. So if we can help chill […]
While we obviously don’t ever want to lose sight of exactly why we’re all wearing face coverings now in the first place, it’s also impossible to ignore that masks have already started to evolve in the public consciousness. The mask started as simply a means of combating infection. Then, it became an avenue of free […]
