To be honest and vulnerable, the last thing I remember liking Tom Cruise in was that mistakenly uploaded The Mummy trailer with the music and sound effects missing. Before that, it was probably Collateral, if only because his villain turn allowed him to flex his acting muscles instead of being yet another runny jumpy action guy.
It's been 22 years since that movie, which is apparently how long it takes for Cruise to try real acting again. At least in a project that's not a Scientology recruitment ad, that is. In DIGGER, Cruise stars as an eccentric billionaire who has to try and rediscover his humanity in the twilight of his life before the butterfly effect of his own actions ends the world. It looks surreal, over-the-top, and, quite depressingly, timely.
Also noteworthy is this sixty-four-year-old man finally being okay with looking old onscreen. Could Cruise finally be trying to become even a little bit relatable? It'd surely be his most demanding stunt of all.
