Today, Firstsecond publishes Ozge Samanci's Dare to Disappoint, a graphic novel memoir of growing up in Turkey. Ms Samanci has favored us with an essay describing the tumultuous relationship between Turkey's authoritarian, thin-skinned president and her fellow cartoonists.
Firstsecond's new Fable Comics is the third knockout anthology in which amazing, hugely varied comics creators recreate some of the world's best loved stories. As with Nursery Rhyme Comics and Fairy Tale Comics, Fable Comics draws from diverse source material and presents it in varied, fresh ways that have something for everyone.
In March 2015, Firstsecond books published its English translation of the first volume of Lastman, the spectacularly successful French martial arts comic; they're bringing out the rest of the books on an aggressive schedule, with Book 2: The Royal Cup coming out today.
Lastman, the revolutionary, bestselling French comic created by Bastien Vivès, Michaël Sanlaville and Balak, arrives in the Anglosphere today, thanks to Firstsecond's English language edition of volume 1: The Stranger.
Paul Pope's Battling Boy was one of the strongest YA comics of 2013; now he's surpassed it with the sequel, The Rise of Aurora West. Paul Pope has graced us with some notes on Aurora West's creation story, along with a long, gripping excerpt, courtesy of publisher Firstsecond.
As I noted in April, Scott McCloud, the titan of comics who brought us Understanding Comics and Zot!, has a new graphic novel title coming from Firstsecond next Feburary, called The Sculptor, which was more than five years in the making. — Read the rest
Yesterday, I reviewed James Kolchaka's new graphic novel for kids, The Glorkian Warrior Delivers a Pizza, which made my six year old daughter laugh until she cried (I liked it too).
Today, I'm delighted to bring you the first three chapters of Glorkian Warrior, an exclusive courtesy of publishers FirstSecond.
Yesterday, FirstSecond formally announced the publication of In Real Life, a graphic novel about gaming and gold farming for young adults based on my award-winning story Anda's Game, adapted by Jen Wang, creator of the amazing graphic novel Koko Be Good. — Read the rest
We've had the first four volumes of Sardine in Space on our bookshelf since Poesy was born, five years ago, but we've only just started reading them at bed-time (it's great to have wonderful books on the shelves for the kid to pull down and discover on her own!) — Read the rest
Jim Ottaviani and Leland Myrick's Feynman was one of the best science-oriented graphic novels I've come across (see my 2011 review for more). So I was delighted to learn that the pair are now working on HAWKING, a graphic biography of The Hawk himself, to be published in 2016. — Read the rest
I absolutely adored Ben Hatke's bestselling, science-fictional kid-comic Zita the Space Girl, and the sequel, Legends of Zita the Space Girl, was the perfect followup. Hatke captures the madcap lunacy of Vaughn Bode and the Mos Eisley Cantina, throws in a kick-ass girl adventurer, and great art, and it's just about perfect. — Read the rest
You saw how much I loved Paul Pope's new graphic novel Battling Boy. Now, Gina from FirstSecond sez, "The world introduced in Battling Boy is rife with monsters and short on heroes . . . but in THE RISE OF AURORA WEST, the fast-paced and adventure-filled extension of Paul Pope's BATTLING BOY universe, we see it through a new pair of eyes: those of Aurora West, daughter of Arcopolis's last great hero, Haggard West. — Read the rest
Paul Pope is one of the great comic book creators working today, a major talent who keeps on surpassing himself. But even by those standards, Battling Boy, the first volume of a two-volume set, is a major achievement. It's a superhero-y, kaiju-y comic that moves so fast that it feels like it's barely under control, but is, in fact, being steered with total confidence and dazzling skill. — Read the rest
I'm very excited to be able to launch the trailer for graphic novelist Paul Pope's new book Battling Boy, a major release from FirstSecond that hits shelves in October. Here's what First Second says about Battling Boy:
"After 13 years, author Paul Pope has written his first major graphic novel, called Battling Boy. — Read the rest
Genius is a new graphic novel written by Steven T Seagle and drawn by Teddy Kristiansen and it's not really like any other graphic novels I've read. In a very good way.
Ted Marx is a physicist, and he's a genius. — Read the rest
Odd Duck is the story of Theodora, "a perfectly normal duck" who likes her routine — swimming, stretching, taking books out of the library, buying duck kibble, doing craft projects (with duck burlap, naturally) and star-gazing. — Read the rest

I wrote aboutSailor Twain, Mark Siegel's beautiful, haunting serialized graphic novel when it began. Since then, the story of a New York steamship captain who is haunted by his love for a mermaid has run its course, and today it has been published in a single, handsome hardcover volume from FirstSecond. — Read the rest
