Kamill1 sez, "My first attempt at an automata, I think it turned out pretty well! Super fun build. A little wink to Jake Von Slatt, sitting down to play the pipe organ. Huzzah!"

Steampunk Automata "Orchestra Von Slatt", Completed Friday, Sep 3 2010 (Thanks, kamill1, via Submitterator!)

  • Wooden automata -- hand-crank animations
  • Pirate theater automata built from Legos*
  • Twisted-wire junk-sculpture automata from Zimbabwe
  • Hand-cranked undersea automata made from twisted wire -- no welds ...

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Oh my! This is absolutely marvelous! I’m kind of speechless. . . um . . . Gosh!

Oh I’m so glad you like it! Originally posted over at “http://www.ThinGypsyThief.com but the video is not embedded there. Thought it was a nice little shoutout to the High Priest of Steampunk! ;)

    Thanks for the post Cory!

Seeing this reminded me of The House on the Rock
    http://www.thehouseontherock.com/
Located in an odd little nexus of weirdness in and around Spring Green Wisconsin (mebbe 2.5-3hrs northwest of Chicago). The house is very cool with an “infinity room” jutting out of the rock the house is built on (really into).

The guy who built the house collected things and housed them in a spectacular series of warehouses -you’ll spend all day. There are musical automatons like the one in this post and also a number of items completely made up and totally steampunky -proof that Steampunk has been around for a very long time.

Not far from there is Dr. Evermor’s Art Park, home of the Forevertron. http://worldofdrevermor.com/

Also nearby is Taliesen, Frank Loyd Wright’s studio. It’s a great weekend trip and beats the hell out of Wisconsin Dells.

Play him off, Keyboard Steampunk Automaton!

Gorgeous automaton, but why do steampunkers wear goggles that won’t fit down over the brims of their hats? If he wants to put on his goggles, does he have to slide them up off the hat first?

    • Jake von Slatt

It’s simply a convenient place to store them, less likely to be damaged that way.
