An Egyptian anti-government activist kisses a riot police officer following clashes in Cairo, Egypt, Friday, Jan. 28, 2011. Tens of thousands of anti-government protesters poured into the streets of Egypt Friday, stoning and confronting police who fired back with rubber bullets and tear gas in the most violent and chaotic scenes yet in the challenge to President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule.

  1. If the Muslim Brotherhood takes over, they’ll probably have her flogged, if not stoned, for such behavior.

  2. If too many of these protesters are photographed kissing the police men it will lose any impact that it might have once had… I’ve been “eh” about these kinds of pix since the cute hippie chick putting the flowers in the gun barrels back in the 60’s.

    1. Is there anything anyone might do which would not cause you to become more jaded? seriously?

I think the cheek kissing is awesome. I think the praying in front of the water cannons is awesome. I think the one older guy in the suit trying to get the young men with the metal barricade not to ram the police with with it is awesome. burning riot vans – not so awesome, but neither is the sheer number of riot vans.

Be impressed. This may not be your people, but it is the people.

      1. Beautifully said. Thank you mdh.

  3. Of course, here in the US, if you kissed a riot cop, they would throw you to the ground, beat you, arrest you, and send you to jail for daring to physically touch an officer in any way. “We call that Assaulting An Officer around these parts!” And the court would back them up…

  4. “Son, you be careful out there today oppressing the people. And don’t forget to bring home some milk.”
