The latest from Joey Roth, designer of minimalist teapots and speakers, is more down to earth: a compass pendant. Made with Shwood in Portland, the frame is laser-cut from maple and rosewood; the compass itself is a Francis Barker model.

Laser cutting 6 straight lines and a circle? Really?

    • Lobster

       At least they didn’t use a hack(saw).

You have no idea. CNCs are even worse – straight rips you could make quickly but relatively sloppily ona table saw, why not spend 30 minutes setting it up & screwing the wood down? It feels absurd to use $25k+ machines to do the stupid work, and then you can’t stop.

Oh wow, that’s really beautiful, and it’s designed by Joey Roth WAIT A MINUTE JOEY ROTH SEND ME MY POSTER BEFORE YOU MAKE NEW SHIT GOD DAMMIT

    • Joey Roth

You didn’t receive your poster? I checked and don’t have any unshipped orders listed, so please email me right away. I’ll include a “forgot to ship” present as well

      • http://imcravingpresidency.tumblr.com/ SedanChair

Sorry to make a fuss in public, but it was intended to be a gift. Thanks for your prompt response via email…I’m ready to be impressed.

That looks like a mighty short needle for any serious orienteering.   But I would, in jest, suggest that the target customer likely already owns a iPhone with GPS, and is buying this as a fashion statement.

I think it looks really cool and something I’d like to get if the compass didn’t look so cracker-jacky

    • http://www.lightning-rose.com/ LightningRose

Agreed. I think it’s lovely, but the REI zipper-pull mini-compass is much more practical.

    It’s not a compass – it’s  a “compass-like piece of jewelry”.
No way to set magnetic declination.

Oh stop. If you fell out of a helicopter in the middle of nowhere & happened to be wearing that you’d be at least a tiny bit thankful.

      • penguinchris

If you’re riding a helicopter in the middle of nowhere, and there is any chance you’re going to fall out, I’d hope you’d be more well-prepared :)

  • Phil Fot

IMHO, it would have been so much more impressive if the maker had used a chisel and gouges instead of a laser.

  • amytys

Considering that the compass itself is $34-45, the overall price isn’t that bad. Declination?  If you know what it is, just do the math in your head.  Overall, I like the video and especially the music, and I didn’t know David Crosby moved into this genre.
