Authorities in Canada are searching for 29-year-old Luka Rocco Magnotta, an adult film actor who appears on various websites featuring hardcore gay male porn. Magnotta is beleived to be the man responsible for killing a friend, videotaping and then publishing online video of the man's dismemberment, then mailing body parts to various addresses in Ottawa, including the ruling Conservative party's headquarters.

A human torso recently discovered in Montreal, and a human hand and foot mailed from Montreal to Ottawa, are all presumed to be connected to the killing.

In 2009, Magnotta (or someone using his name) published a blog post on "how to disappear completely and never be found."

From the Montreal Gazette:

In December of 2010, he appears to have posted his first (really, really horrible) kitten video, followed by another one a year later. In March of this year, he appears to have launched a blog, entitled Necrophiliac Serial Killer Luka Magnotta, in which he confesses to a sexual desire for corpses.

Encyclopedia Dramatica has more on the kitten-killing videos.

Separately, the Gazette reports that police say Magnotta once dated lesbian serial sex killer Karla Homolka. Magnotta once denied this, long before he himself became a murder suspect.

A blog authored by "Luka Magnotta" on the erotic joys of cannibalism is right here (for as long as it lasts), and contains images and content that most people will find upsetting. An excerpt follows.

When I was a young child, I used to spend much of my time alone, either in the woods or in the local cemetery, where there was the grave of a 19 year old boy who died in the early half of last century. I felt close to that boy, and would pick flowers in the woods and take them to his grave.

In 2003, I discovered a mummified corpse of a young man in a vault, in a church where I was doing restoration work for a friend. I fell in love with him, and it broke my heart to seal him in there. I wanted to take him home and look after him.

I day dream about having him here with me. Silly ordinary things like watching TV together, listening to music, taking him out for picnics, watching a DVD late at night before taking him up to bed with me. All very ordinary things, apart from the fact that I want to do them with a desiccated or mummified corpse.

I don't have a problem attracting living men. I'm just naturally attracted to the dead. Some people never realize until its too late that excepting their feelings and not acting anymore is true freedom.

It's not cool to the world being a necrophiliac. It's bloody lonely. But I dont really care, I have never cared what people thought of me, most people are judgemental idiots. I'm unable to talk to anybody about it and there's always the knowledge that 99% of people would be repulsed by me if they found out about my feelings. Some people would even want to harm me.

Do I feel ashamed? never, but there's nothing but love in my heart for that man in the grave and the guy in the vault. I don't see myself as some creepy pervert. I'm just somebody who has feelings, real feelings, for dead men.

In fairness he is non-partisan or trans-partisan as while he mailed the foot to the Conservatives he also mailed a hand to the Liberals.

      • Robert

I heard the note to the Conservatives said: “Here, put this in your mouth. Lord knows you’ve done it enough times. One would think it was a fetish with you people.”

And the note to the Liberals: “I heard you guys needed a hand. Here’s one. I have another, if you need more.”

He mailed the asshole to the NDP: “I found another willing member of your party. Glad I could help.”

It’s pretty anti-gay for the media to keep adding the qualifier “gay” to his status as a porn actor, now isn’t it?

    • ChrisSF

Yes it is, especially considering that it is not accurate.  He appeared in films with both men and women apparently.  Quite homophobic, really, as is Boing Boing’s repetition of the inaccurate and stigmatizing descriptor.

      • Birdseed

Also, that photograph, meant to depict him as particularly effeminate. Other pictures in the links make him appear closer to a stereotypically male appearance, but yet it’s this one that spreads on the internet.

Yup, it’s bloody disgusting. I have no idea how ‘Porn actor’ wouldn’t have sufficed.

    • Shinkuhadoken

Well, that’s the American media. In Canada, where it counts since that’s where he’s located, he’s currently known first and foremost as the “Body parts suspect.“

      • Antinous / Moderator

Surely the Murdoch empire has christened him The Cannibal Butt-Boy by now.

        • Shinkuhadoken

Actually, a headline like that would be considered a hate crime in Canada. You can’t incite hatred against a group of people simply for who they are.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BWQ7TZ5YGTPHFYYVXMMEVOBIYY lightoftruth4

That didn’t stop the Montreal Gazette from comparing gay porn to killing kittens (both “scary”)

    • jhavatar

I think they are only using it as a qualifier for his career — gay-porn as opposed to big-butt-porn or child-porn or whatever. Do you not expect the specialization when a lawyer or engineer murders someone… From the pic I assume he further specialized in “twink”.

  • EH

    Well that escalated quickly.

  • Stephen Blais

If it had been a hetero-porn actor, would the headline have read “Straight porn actor in Canada…”? Of course not. Grrrrrr.

    • Antinous / Moderator

      And here’s your answer. No.

    • EeyoreX

It’s a gender thing. You will never, ever see a female porn performer labeled as a “lesbian porn actress” no matter how many girl-on-girl scenes she’s appeared in. It’s not in the language.

      • jellyfishattack

Well, that’s just because men like to pretend that lots of women would like to sleep with other women (sorry guys, it’s not true :)

        • blueelm

Or that lots of women like to sleep with other women who men think are hot and that these women want to do it to turn guys on. What a let down reality is!

    • http://www.ikaink.net Itsumishi

If he had been a receptionist would the headline read: “Gay receptionist in Canada”?

      • Antinous / Moderator

That’s a false equivalency. Taking phone calls and taking cream pies are not equal. And “gay porn star” does not actually imply that he’s gay, just that he stars in gay porn.

        • http://www.ikaink.net Itsumishi

Says who? People not working in the porn industry?

So, logically, one needs to find who he sold his car to and go from there.  And then look for a guy who looks like him and never goes anywhere without his suitcase of money.  Also:  Check the bus lines.

Seriously, people, if you’re planning on doing something, anything at all, that you do not want anyone else to know about: don’t talk about it on the internet.  You absolute dolt.

    • Antinous / Moderator

The CNN comment thread is predictably nasty.

    • BBNinja

The comments on nearly every article on CNN invariably lead to bashing Jews, how evil they are and how all the worlds’ ills are their fault…regardless of the actual content of the article or whether or not it has any bearing at all.  Most of it seems to be various Middle Easterners bashing Israelis.  I saw an elaborate albeit incredibly moronic comment thread like that play out on an article about Beyonce once.

      • strangefriend

“The comments on nearly every article on CNN invariably lead to bashing Jews, how evil they are and how all the worlds’ ills are their fault…regardless of the actual content of the article or whether or not it has any bearing at all.  Most of it seems to be various Middle Easterners bashing Israelis. . .”

There’s a disconnect between your first sentence & your next sentence.  Blaming the ills of the world on Jews is indeed whacked out.  Middle Easterners criticizing Israelis, not so much.  You do realize that Israel is oppressing Palestinians?  You’ve heard of the Occupation?

        • BBNinja

Yeah, I’m not taking either side on that. It’s just the fact that they have these pudding contests in almost every article on CNN. The connect is that instead of arguing political conflict based merits, it always comes down to religion bashing and regardless of the debate if your best argument is the other guys are Jews or Mormons, Muslims or whatever you really have no argument.

          • strangefriend

             Agreed.

As if it’s difficult to realise that a revulsion for rotting meat is perfectly natural, and the lack of it means you’re broken.

Folks who think they can have a rewarding relationship with a Real Doll are pretty messed up, but they’ve got nothing on peeps who think it’s feasible to have romantic attachments to dead bodies…

    The mind boggles.

    • BBNinja

Oh…yuck.  I just threw up in my mouth a little after reading all that. :X

    • Antinous / Moderator

As if it’s difficult to realise that a revulsion for rotting meat is perfectly natural, and the lack of it means you’re broken.

Yeah, but then how do explain Roquefort or Camembert?

      • travtastic

        Ennui.

      • Jake0748

Roquefort and Camembert are rotting dairy products. Not meat.  And, presumably have never been sentient.

        • Ashen Victor

Just because they cant communicate doesn’t means they have no feelings.

I love cheese and cheese loves me back being delicious.

Roquefort and Camembert are rotting dairy products. Not meat.  And, presumably have never been sentient.

          I don’t know.  I met a Picón Bejes-Tresviso once…

        • Peppermint

Technically, Roquefort isn’t rotting, it’s molding.

      • strangefriend

Or casu marzu, the Sardinian cheese that sometimes has maggots . . .

    • http://profiles.google.com/marc.k.mielke Marc Mielke

I don’t particularly like rotting corpses and in fact have an oversensitive reaction to spoiled food and the like, but would not impart any moral judgement to this reaction.

Really as long as the necrophile doesn’t go out and kill people himself I don’t have much of a problem with them boffing corpses. There might be a property crime involved there assuming he doesn’t have the permission of relatives, but other than that he’s not hurting anyone.

The optimal solution would be something like this:

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Parliment/100000014947469 Andrew Parliment

This suggestion made me feel a little queasy, but I can’t shake the feeling that you are right and I am just old fashioned…

      • millie fink

The problem, though, is that if a person is broken in that way, they’re  likely broken in other ways too. Dangerous ones. I wonder if studies have been done on whether an array of tendencies tends to go along with necrophilia.

        • blueelm

The lack of distinction between living consenting people and dead people is disturbing. Projecting the same sense of having a relationship onto a dead person is to me still a part of a creepy inability to understand boundaries in the sense that his sexual desire trumps all else. This is why I still find it disturbing, despite the fact that it is not harming the corpse. It still suggests something very wrong going on in with the person in when they talk about a dead body and seem not to see it as different than a living person. It suggests something scary for the living to be thought of that way. Also, the fact that this guy tortures animals isn’t helping.

      • http://boingboing.net/ The Life Of Bryan

Terrible form design; leads to horrible ambiguity as to which box one is checking.

The things the christians have told me will happen after I die if I don’t do as they say, those I can dismiss. But if I check the wrong box on that card… I’m pretty sure those things COULD ACTUALLY HAPPEN.

      • Matt Staggs

I think that is theoretically fine, but what about this guy having sex with your own loved ones?

      • http://twitter.com/fossilfuels Funk Daddy

I don’t think that fetishizing corpses sexually is the same as what this poor chaps describing by what he’s written. Although I restrict my perusal to what is in this posting and it’s comments sans links.

Professing an ability to love a corpse, which is regardless of it’s symbology to the viewer an inanimate object, along with a disdain for the prospect of what he considers the same relationship with another person, to me indicates an extremely limited empathic ability. Which has led him to conflate what he -can-feel, with what he believes he witnesses other people in real relationships feel toward one another.

He claims to have friends, but that does not reveal empathic friendship relation only a mutually beneficial relationship of some kind that both parties appreciate. He could be conflating the positive sensation of beneficial  or pleasant shared experience with friendship based on caring about your friends feelings and well-being.

He’s just a confused sociopath with an extremely limited range of emotion, but that wants far more and believes that he has or has had it.

This armchair is lumpy and uncomfortable.

So the guy (allegedly?)  murdered somebody, dismembered them and mailed their body parts around.  Who gives a fuck if he’s gay, straight, porno actor, whatever?  Mainly he’s a person who needs to be locked up in a cell.  Probably til he dies of old age.

    • That_Anonymous_Coward

People who need to keep another group in a negative light care.
While this person was bisexual and had done porn of both varieties casting the evildoer as simply gay adds to the public perception that gays are evil.

Ask someone about pedophiles, they will tell you they are gay men stealing children to indoctrinate them.  The truth is a majority of pedophiles identify as heterosexual.  But it is still claimed that the tiny number of homosexuals commit most of the sexual assaults on children.

The gays are dirty, the gays are evil, the gays do horrible things…

      • Jake0748

Ok, I get what you’re saying.  I guess my gripe is with the media people who originally published the story and chose to include the  gay/porno whatever as part of the headline.

        • That_Anonymous_Coward

Well porn star gets you a certain response as does gay…
Its not pretty looking at how the sausage is made, but people still eat it.  It makes the story sure to be more popular and overblown with people.
Fair and Balanced reporting is dead, if it bleeds it leads.  If you can make it sound more shocking go with it.

The other problem I have with this whole story is he seems to have some sort of history in stirring up drama online, and things are not adding up as the story is taking on a life of its own.

In a Canadian version of the story the video of the man being killed online was described as Asian.  The CNN link says white.
CNN glosses over the fact they are assuming the different parts mailed are from the same corpse.
We found a blog post where someone who might have been him or just someone pretending to be him made this whole post about how to vanish by laying out all of his plans…. online, under his own name, where no one would find it…  o_O

There is alot not adding up and some of this is feeling really manufactured for consumption.  The fact he has a page on ED really should call into question anything found online attributed to him.  But in the rush rush get it online first world the facts are the first victims.

He might be a killer, I have no idea neither do the news reports.
But he is a Gay Porn Star being sought in connection with something bloody… its like a headline hattrick.

          • AnthonyC

I really don’t care a whit about Fair or Balanced, it’s Relevant and Accurate that matter much more to me.

          • That_Anonymous_Coward

@acvicari:disqus  How is making a gay porn relevant to the story?
CNN claimed the victim was white, while the truth is he was Asian.  It was reported from the get go in Canada they thought the victim was Asian, why would CNN change that… to appeal to the terrified whites who feel anyone not just like them is evil.  The alleged killer is white, lets call him gay to set him apart.
Tiny little alterations and the story is massive headlines, and feeds a whole buncha hate.
Fair and Balanced means Relevant and Accurate, it is unfair to report on guesses that are not accurate.  It is not balanced to report on part of his porn career because it isn’t relevant to the story.

          • AnthonyC

It isn’t relevant at all. I think talking about gay porn is irrelevant, unfair, and unbalanced.

I was just commenting on that phrase, ‘fair and balanced,’ which certain news sources aim for.

      • http://disqus.com/Kimmoth/ Kimmo

I can easily understand feeling that way about such references, but I’m quite certain Xeni’s intent wasn’t to vilify.

Most evil is banal. In this case, the banality is that ‘gay’ adds a bit of pop to any headline.

I’d suggest any analysis of the phenomenon in this context right here should should start from that point.

        • That_Anonymous_Coward

Xeni is reporting the story as presented, if I thought she was trying to build it into something bigger I would have called her out on it.
We would have yelled and shouted at each other but still be left with the problem, the problem is the media spinning the stories looking for any hook to get an angle to get more views.
Xeni didn’t create the whole gay porn star cannibal necro angle, Xeni is presenting what is out there.  It is for the reader to sift the information and draw their own conclusions.

Jake0748 asked why it was relevant to the topic, and in truth it isn’t except for the people who need to have shocking reporting which is a truly sad commentary on our society.

So please don’t think I was ranting against Xeni in this case, it was a rant about the media churning these stories trying to find the angle to get more eyes on them.

This is a good story to use as an example of why certain terms are picked, and why we need extra sensationalism.  How certain groups are going to pounce on this story and use it to further their anti-gay views and what effect it has on people who don’t think it effected them.

    • AnthonyC

“If you did commit the perfect crime, nobody would ever find out – so how could anyone possibly know that there weren’t perfect crimes? And as soon as you looked at it that way, you realized that perfect crimes probably got committed all the time, and the coroner marked it down as death by natural causes, or the newspaper reported that the shop had never been very profitable and had finally gone out of business…”

So I agree with your second point, but not the first.

      • http://ravenlunatick.wordpress.com/ ravenlunatick

In my dealings with accused criminals, I’ve found that they all believe that they are criminal masterminds who can stump law enforcement simply by denying any wrongdoing. I think before working in a law office, I would have agreed with you.

        • AnthonyC

I agree with your premise- that many people falsely believe they are criminal masterminds.
My point is that this observation is not evidence against the existence of criminal masterminds, because you would expect this aspect of the world to look the same whether perfect crimes exist or not.
