John Scalzi, on the news that Penguin Books and Random House are contemplating a merger:

If the (possible) merger of Penguin and Random House isn't called Random Penguin, they'll have failed.

— John Scalzi (@scalzi) October 25, 2012

(via IO9)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Dude, I totally thought “Penguin House” when they announced this!  Logo is an igloo

I thought “Penguin House or Random Penguin,” getting both!

I thought “Random Penguin House.” The brand logo on the spine of each book jacket would be the graphic representation of one randomly chosen penguin nest out of all possible penguin nests.

I disagree.  I want my penguins to be well explained, and as predictable as possible.

Just to be clear, the rumored talks are between Pearson (owner of Penguin) and Bertelsmann (owner of Random House). Neither of these iconic publishers have been independent for some time now.

Each copy of their books will feature a different penguin selected randomly by their printing machine.
