Laina Walker, better known as "Overly Attached Girlfriend," has treated her legion of fans to a zombified version of her face for the season. Let the memes begin!

Overly Attached Zombie? (imgur.com)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

My favorite so far was, “Til Death do us part?  I don’t think so.”

The grace. When I was 20, I would have thrown a shit fit in her situation.   Or scumbag Steve’s. Leaning into it just wouldn’t have even occurred to me. I guess everyone has a higher boiling point after the chans, etc. If someone’s going to call you a Nazi on a daily basis, ‘overly attached’ starts to seem like a pretty tepid pejorative.

I don’t know why I’m trying to explain it away. Good for you, OAG. And in case Reddit hasn’t pummeled this into the ground already, kudos on those first-class first-world teeth.

You seem to be writing under the misconception that this is somehow about mocking a real person?   In reality, miss Laina very clearly performed a fictional character in her first and her subsequent videos, and it’s that character wich has successfully taken off and become a meme.

Maybe you have her confused with Rebecca Black, they’re both female and on the internet after all. Still, doing research before forming an opinion never hurts.

Her situation?  She created the meme…

      • feetleet

I stand completely corrected. I was familiar with the macro, but not the story behind it. Yup Yup.

    Forced Meme is Forced

       yet still really funny.
      that’s the magic of internets.

        Hi Laina, how’s it going?

    • Toby

Funny that you replied with a forced meme.

  • brainflakes

Clearly an overly attached goth girlfriend.

  • http://www.nathanhornby.com/ Nathan Hornby

She really needs to stop flogging this dead horse.

Wasn’t funny on Reddit, even less funny here.

You have the right to be wrong.

      • http://www.nathanhornby.com/ Nathan Hornby

        Thanks!

For what it’s worth I’m referring to the perpetuation, rather than the original gag. The original gag still works, but her painful over merchandising of it makes my eyes roll like they’re going to fall out of my head.

        • Sigmund_Jung

I think it is cool how she managed that. Not everybody likes their face becoming a thing on the internet. She just surfed the wave in great style.

          • http://www.nathanhornby.com/ Nathan Hornby

For what it’s worth she essentially created the meme, she’s not just going along with it.

    • wysinwyg

You realize you’re free to ignore her?  If I thought she was actually doing something harmful I wouldn’t make that suggestion.  We shouldn’t ignore everything we don’t like.  But I don’t see how OAT’s “internet fame” affects you any which way.

      • http://www.nathanhornby.com/ Nathan Hornby

You’re right. I just spent too much flicking through reddit this morning – I was over exposed.

Why on earth are you on Reddit if you’re oversensitized to memes? I can understand being sick of them, but you’re setting yourself up for failure.

          • http://www.nathanhornby.com/ Nathan Hornby

As I say, don’t mind the original meme – it’s the perpetuating spin offs that melt my brain. Laina knows she’s milking her 15 mins anyway – just check out her twitter feed.

  • TWX

Uh, she’s stated in her videos that her last name is not Walker.  Please correct the entry to stop spreading around this wrong information…
