Like I said earlier today, I'm a sucker for any breakfast that smiles back at me, so a hearty "hell yes" to Janis Paintbox's gallery of decorated oatmeal.

The Art of Oatmeal (Thanks, Leopold Bloom!)

Update: in the comments, Rob from theHumm sez, "My father-in-law does these for my mother-in-law every morning. A few years ago we put together this poster as a birthday present for him and as a fundraiser for the local food bank. All credit goes to my wife for the great headline text."

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

I’d like a smiling breakfast made of 2 eggs sunny-side-up and bacon for a grin.

    “Facing the Mueslix

Oh god, that is the pun to end all puns.

    Great post.
There’s a wonderful artist called Piven, who creates artworks (mostly portraits of famous people) from found objects. He created this beautiful ad for a food company.

They are lovely! If they are meant for little people though, that sheer amount of food might be a tad bit intimidating to diminutive tummys. I know I could never eat that much oatmeal when I was say 5 or 6…

  • jmullan

If you try to do it while hungover and under the influence of bacon, it comes out a bit weird:

Looks a bit nightmarish to me. It’s like an Arcimboldo creature come to life.

We recently watched “Mulan” and there’s a scene where Mooshu the dragon (Eddie Murphy) offers Mulan porridge with egg eyes and a bacon smile “and it’s happy to see you!”

Regarding quantities: When my son was 5 I discovered that oatmeal is one of his favorite foods. He can put away close to an adult sized portion.

Looking at these, I can just hear Danny Elfman’s “The Breakfast Machine”.

    Good morning Mr. Breakfast!

  • Rob from theHumm

My father-in-law does these for my mother-in-law every morning. A few years ago we put together this poster as a birthday present for him and as a fundraiser for the local food bank. All credit goes to my wife for the great headline text.

  • kkretsch

That’s great work and fun to look at. I myself take daily pictures of my own meal, but with neither spare time nor artistic hands the pictures are more documentary.
But five years of great food wait to be looked at, have a try http://www.mampf-mit.de/ and there is even a book series in print, too.

  • LogicalDash

When my breakfast smiles at me, I feel like a cannibal. It might as well jump out, hug me, and say “I love you” before taking its final stride into my gullet.

  • Maxi Malone

Great poster! I love oatmeal, eat it every day.

  • Bob

Rob- Great poster! Your dad is a very creative man. Cudos to your wife too, great title.
